Dear Parents,

?Dear?Families,????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? June 2020???I?cannot thank you enough for being true partners in this new and challenging “at home learning” format. I am truly impressed with your dedication to your child’s education! The children have made so much progress at home these past few months. Doing a bit of work over the summer would be extremely beneficial in helping your child be prepared for next year. ?Here are great ideas on what to work on at home this summer:Reading:?Read- Reading and/or listening to books daily is the best way to keep those reading and comprehension skills sharp. I have posted a virtual book room on my webpage. Feel free to check it out. Click on any of the books to hear a read aloud of that book.Log onto Raz Kids!?? Raz kids will be open throughout the summer so that your child can continue to work on books at their level at home with you. ?Please continue to monitor your child’s reading.?The children should listen to the book, read it at least one time (I highly recommend two to three times), and there is a comprehension quiz at the end for them to take.Practice Sight Words!? ?You can find the words on my webpage. The more words your child knows, the more fluent their reading becomes! They can play “hot lava.”? Write?each word on a card (piece of paper).? Spread the words out on the floor.? You call?out one of the words and they?have to?hop to the correct word and stand on it (have them spell it out loud).? The floor is the “hot lava” and they want to hop on the words on paper as these are the rocks in the hot lava!?They can play memory.? Write each word two times (each on their own paper or card).? Flip all 20 cards/papers over and they can play memory.? When they turn over a word, have them read it and spell it.?Turn all 10 words on cards/paper upside down.? They children can play a simple game of turning over the card and reading the word.? If they can read the word, they can keep it.? If they cannot read the word, they should turn it back upside down and continue playing until they get them all.?Go outside a write the words with sidewalk chalk.Math:?Work on Addition and Subtraction Fluency. The more they practice, the more fluent they will become. You can also find flashcards under “printable resources” on my webpage or make your own flashcards. If they need to use their math fingers or manipulatives, this is fine! The goal is the more that they practice, the more fluent they will become and then they will not need their fingers or manipulatives. If you notice that your child is very fluent with the 0-5 facts, please feel free to work on addition and subtraction problems 6-10.Make games with cards! Your student can “fish for facts.” Write each equation on a card/paper and turn it upside down on the floor. If you have paper clips, have them put one on each card. You then need a magnet on a string to “fish” for the problems. Once they get one, they should answer it correctly. If they are correct, they keep the card. If it is incorrect, it should go back into the water (the floor). If you do not have paper clips, a magnet, and string, just put them on the floor and their arm and hand can be the fishing pole!Website: - Our trial to Happy Numbers ends at the end of this month, unfortunately. We have set the students up on zearn so they can continue to practice their math skills over the summer. The lessons look similar to what the students have been doing on Happy Numbers. I will be e-mailing you your child’s username and password soon.Printable Packets- There will also be math review packets from Zearn under “printable resources” on my webpage for those that would prefer to print it out and have their child practice that way.Writing:?Letters and Journals- Please have your child continue to practice writing over the summer. Writing letters to friends and family or keeping a daily journal is a great way to incorporate writing into your summer routine. I would love to get a letter from the children and will be sure to respond! My address is 154 Stickles Terrace Kingston, NY 12401. Writing Prompts-Here is a link to some writing prompts that your child may write about as well. Seesaw will be open until July 15th. I will not be checking or posting assignments in Seesaw over the summer but you can use any assignments you did not get to during the school year as summer practice, if you wish.Thank you again for your hard work and dedication the past few months! It was an absolute pleasure to work with you and your children this year. Have a fun and healthy summer!Love,Mrs. Assa ................
