Kindergarten

Letter Assessment

?Amanda Myers 2013

1. Print off a copy of the assessment sheet for

each child.

2. Give the child a highlighter.

3. Put the date on the assessment form.

4. Ask the child if they can tell you the first letter.

5. If the child knows it, have them highlight it with

the marker. On the assessment form, put a check

mark by that word.

6. Repeat with the next word.

7. If the child doesn¡¯t know the first few letters, ask

them if they know any of the letters on the page.

Mark down any that they tell you and let them

highlight them.

8. If the child still doesn¡¯t know any letters, ask

them to point to certain letters. If they can pick

out a given letter, put a dot on the data form

instead of a check mark.

9. Complete the chart on a regular basis to see

each child¡¯s progress. Challenge them to highlight

the whole page.
