Evaluation Of Physical Activity Programs

The August 6 issue of Evaluation and Program Planning (Vol 29, Issue 3) contains a special section devoted to the evaluation of physical activity programs. Nine papers are included with topics including evaluation of programs designed for older adults and underserved youth; programs to increase walking; programs targeting individual, organization and policy change; and programs implemented at the community, state and national level.

Get Fit New Jersey! -A Downloadable Publication

Get Fit New Jersey! is a publication of the NJ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which was formed to encourage and promote physical fitness statewide. The project was proposed to meet the Governor’s Office fitness challenge and address the needs of the people of New Jersey however it may be helpful to other states as well. A Council member or a resource member authored each of the 21 chapters, and the result is an easy-to-read guide to better health and fitness for people of all ages.

U.S. Department of Transportation Strategic Plan

The U.S. Department of Transportation has released its strategic plan for fiscal years 2006-2011. The plan is designed to build on the progress made by the DOT in improving transportation in the United States and examines how the department will work to lay the foundation for a new transportation model that will be

needed to support America’s economy in future years. The department has set policy goals in the areas of safety; reduced congestion; global connectivity; environmental stewardship; and security, preparedness, and response.

International Council On Active Aging "Welcome Back To Fitness" Site Targets Baby Boomers

This online toolkit from the International Council on Active Aging offers age-friendly guidance for the 50+ fitness newcomer or returning exerciser The ICAA Welcome Back to Fitness site at can be used by older adults who are thinking about exercise, just getting started or fitness regulars. The toolkit provides resources that are applicable regardless if they exercise at home or in a gym or at a senior center.

New SmallStep Kids Web Site Shows Children the Power of Healthy Eating!

The HHS Smallsteps program has added a website geared to children. It contains exciting games to help children understand that wise food choices and good eating habits can help improve all of their favorite activities. The site includes online games developed in partnership with Warner Brothers starring the Tazmanian DevilTM and other Looney ToonsTM characters and a host of other features including mechanisms that bounce children off the site and prompt them to get up and get moving if they sit around for too long.

Thunderhead Publishes Complete Streets Report

The Thunderhead Alliance has published the first nationwide analysis of policies designed to create complete streets that routinely accommodate bicycle and pedestrian travel. The Complete Streets Report, prepared by consultant Barbara McCann, inventories complete streets policies around the country and analyzes them in preparation for the Thunderhead Complete the Streets Campaign Model to help state and local advocacy organizations spread complete streets to more communities. The American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation have joined together to form the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, to combat the spread of childhood obesity and the serious diseases associated with it such as heart disease and diabetes. The Alliance website houses all of their latest materials on the Healthy Schools Program, the Go Healthy Challenge, and many other resources for a variety of ages.

Aquatic Connections in HigherEd Website

Aquatic Connections in HigherEd is an educational initiative that promotes aquatic education, and student guidance for those seeking a career in aquatics. This website is a virtual learning center and a network of resources and solutions for students seeking a career in aquatics.

Physical Activity and Children and Adolescents Knowledge Path

The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Library has added a knowledge path about physical activity and children and adolescents. This electronic resource guide offers a selection of current resources that analyze data, describe public health campaigns and other promotion programs, and report on research aimed at identifying promising strategies for improving physical activity levels within families, schools, and communities. The knowledge path also provides resources that describe the consequences of sedentary behavior. The MCH Library is located at the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH) at Georgetown University.

Physical Activity Statistics and Research

Methodology To Evaluate The Outcomes Of The Team Nutrition Initiative In Schools

This project develops a data collection methodology to evaluate outcomes of Team Nutrition, a voluntary USDA school-based initiative to promote nutrition education, healthy eating, and physical activity. The project uses information technology to collect high-quality data while decreasing respondent and investigator burden and lowering costs of collecting and analyzing evaluation data. Seven data collection instruments were developed: five collect information from school personnel, one collects information from students, and the seventh is an on-site observation of the school environment. The instruments are being pilot-tested in one State, but because Team Nutrition is a national initiative, the methodology could be useful to other States.

Florida Report with Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Recommendations

The University of Florida has published a report titled Safe Ways to School - the Role in Multi-Modal Planning. This report considers the existing practice of state agencies that affect transportation, land development, school planning, and best practices throughout Florida and the country to develop guidance for legislative and policy development in Florida.

A Foundation for the Future: Analysis of Local Wellness Policies from the 100 Largest School Districts

This analyses provided by the School Nutrition Association outlines key characteristics of local wellness policies approved by the largest 100 school districts by enrollment in the United States. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the top 100 school districts make up less than 1% of the school districts in the nation but account for 16% of the schools, 21% of the teachers and 23% of the nation's K-12 students.

American Academy of Pediatrics Report: The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds

The American Academy of Pediatrics has published this report in defense of play and in response to forces threatening free play and unscheduled time. These forces include changes in family structure, the increasingly competitive college admissions process, and federal education policies that have led to reduced recess and physical education in many schools. The report suggests that reduced time for physical activity may be contributing to the academic differences between boys and girls, as schools with sedentary learning styles become more difficult settings for some boys to navigate successfully.

Understanding the Relationship Between Public Health And The Built Environment: A Report Prepared For The LEED-ND Core Committee

This report summarizes research regarding the links between public health and neighborhood design, and provides recommendations about how this knowledge can be integrated into the LEED-ND rating system.

AFHK Report: Giving Kids the Voice of Authority: Engaging Students in the Fight Against Childhood Obesity

A new report from Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) showcases how schools and students in Massachusetts are working together to improve student wellness. The report features the successes of student councils in six high schools across the Bay State. Giving Kids the Voice of Authority: Engaging Students in the Fight Against Childhood Obesity is the second in a series of Field Reports published by Action for Healthy Kids and designed to mobilize change at the grassroots level by involving parents, students, and school leaders. The reports are part of Action for Healthy Kids’ recently launched “Campaign for School Wellness,” a multifaceted communications and outreach effort that brings to schools new tools and resources for strengthening their wellness efforts.

CDC BMI Calculator for Children and Teens

The CDC BMI Calculator for Children and Teens is an accurate and easy-to-use tool for calculating body mass index and the corresponding BMI-for-age percentile for children and teens. The calculator presents numeric results, displays a graphic that shows the weight category for the corresponding BMI, provides a simple explanation of the results, and plots the BMI on a printable CDC growth chart. The site provides relevant links, answers to common questions, and general tips on achieving a health weight through good nutrition and physical activity.

Iowa Bike Maps Available At No Charge

The 2005 Iowa Transportation Map for Bicyclists shows hundreds of miles of multi-use trails and also includes traffic levels for all paved roadways so bicyclists can choose the road routes that match their level of riding experience. There is also information about 48 multi-use trails that are five miles or longer; cycling safety tips; and contacts, including Web sites, for additional information on cycling in Iowa."

Scorecard to Determine if Your Community is Pedestrian-Friendly

This scorecard, designed by the Voorhees Transportation Policy Institute is meant to can help citizens and local officials evaluate whether or not their community is pedestrian-friendly, and whether the right tools are in place to make it so. This scorecard helps answer the questions, "How walkable are our communities?" and "How can we make our communities safer and more enjoyable places to walk?" This may help us in determining how to use all the data we're collecting.

Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments Environmental Nutrition and Activity Community Tool (ENACT).

The Strategic Alliance developed ENACT to offer community members realistic ways to create positive change in their food and activity environments. ENACT is a concrete menu of strategies designed to help you improve nutrition and activity environments on a local level. These strategies have been organized into seven environments that were carefully selected for their importance in individual and community health. ENACT was designed to complement current education and community efforts and to empower local action to address priority issues. Working locally can make healthy eating and regular activity a realistic option for everyone, and can bubble up to affect state and national policy.
