Introduction: Game: Three Truths & 1 Lie:

Play the game three truths and one lie. Ask several kids ahead of time to come up with three things about themselves that are true and 1 thing that is a lie. They will then stand in front of the kids and give them the 4 things about themselves and the kids have to decide which is the lie. You may want to get some adults to play.

After several rounds of the game, ask the kids:

√ Is truth important?

√ Is it always easy to tell if someone is lying?

Bible Lesson:

1 John 2:18:

√ What does John mean by “little children?”

√ What does John mean by the “last hour?”

√ What is the “Antichrist?” (literally means “against Christ” or “in place of Christ.” Anti – Jesus.) The word “antichrist” occurs in the bible only in the letters of John (1 John 2:18, 22, 4:3; 2 John 7) But even though the word is not used frequently, the idea is revealed many times.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 and 2:8 “the son of perdition, the man of sin, and the lawless one.”

The word “antichrist” has three meanings:

1. Antichrist is a person (Revelation 13:16;19) This will be a world leader that will come to the scene and be so popular and charismatic that he will actually take the place of Christ in the minds and hearts of people.

2. Spirit of Antichrist: (1 John 4:3)’

3. Teachers who deny Jesus’ deity: They make Jesus out to be less than He is. John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.”

1 John 2:19:

√ Where did the “antichrists” come from?

They came from within and at one time or another they were connected to Christian communities. They are persuaded to think that they know more than anyone else. They leave the Church and the truth of God’s Word and they develop their own truth. Most cults grow out of some established “religion.” They basically distort three Biblical truths:

1. The Trinity – One God in three persons

2. Jesus Christ

3. Salvation is by grace alone through faith – not by works

1 John 2:20

√ What does it mean to be “anointed?” This is a common property that all believers have. “Anointing” literally means “ointment” or “oil.” Here it is referring to the Holy Spirit. When you are saved all believers receive the Holy Spirit.

√ Who did you get your anointing from? (God)

√ What does the Holy Spirit do for us?

a. Guides us in truth (John 16:13)

b. Convicts us of sin (John 16:8)

c. Lives in us (John 14:16-17)

d. Prays for us (Romans 8:26)

1 John 2 :21:

√ Why is John writing to them?

√ What do they know? (The truth) The word “know” means to know intuitively. Because you have a relationship with God there are certain things that you know – not because you have figured everything out; but because you just know that they are wrong.

1 John 2:22-23

√ What is the basic lie of the “antichrist?”

(They deny Jesus Christ.) They will take parts of who Jesus is and leave out other areas. Partial truth is never truth. It is a lie!

√ What is the truth about Jesus:

1. He is God:

John 10:30; “I and My Father are one.”

John 14:9; “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father…”

Mark 1:1; “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

John 8:58; “Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Here Jesus was claiming 2 things about His deity

1. eternal existence of God

2. The Name of God – no one used that name except God alone!

Isaiah 9:6: The names of the Messiah:

a. Wonderful

b. Counselor

c. Mighty God

d. Eternal Father

e. Prince of Peace

2. He is the Messiah: All four gospels refer to Jesus as the “Christ.” This is the Greek translation for the Hebrew “Messiah” meaning “anointed one.” There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament about the coming Messiah that Jesus literally fulfilled. What changed for the Jewish people is that they began looking for a military “savior.”

√ Why did the Jewish nation not see Jesus as the Messiah?

√ What where they looking for? (a Military leader)

4. He is our Savior:

1 John 4:14; “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the World.”

John 1:29; “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

√ Why does the world need a Savior?

√ Why do you need a Savior?

√ Can you save yourself?

5. He is our Creator:

John 1:1; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. …All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Colossians 1:16; “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible….All things were created through Him and for Him.”

√ Why is it important to see Jesus as creator? (Because the entire Bible talks of Jesus as a part of creation.)

6. He is our Example:

John 13:15; “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”

1 Peter 2:21; “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.”

√ Names some examples from Jesus’ life that you can follow?

a. by washing the disciples feet He served others

b. by touching and talking to those who were not loved he showed the kindness of God

c. by quoting Scripture when Jesus was tempted we can use the power of God’s word

d. by praying for strength to follow God just as Jesus did

7. He is our High Priest:

Hebrews 4:14-16; “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Jesus knows us! He knows our weaknesses and we can go to Him at any time and ask for forgiveness. We have a God who understands – and yet calls us to holiness.

√ Why is it important that we can go straight to Jesus?

6. He is the Vine: John 15:5; “I am the vine, you are the branches, He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” A truth of Scripture is that we need to “abide” in Jesus. We need to get to know Jesus and worship Jesus. We need to have a relationship with Jesus. As we learn from Jesus we are able to be used by God.

√ How do we “abide” in Jesus?

√ How do we get to know Jesus?

Conclusion: The truth about Jesus is important. It is at the very core of what we believe!
