LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., July 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Throughout the state yesterday, voters supported an amendment to the Georgia State Constitution that said the "right to life is vested in each human being

from their earliest biological beginning until natural death" and that right should be protected by law.

In all 46 counties where the amendment was presented, it passed overwhelmingly by an amazing 75 % ! Georgia is the first state in the nation where voters have said "Yes" to the Personhood question.

Georgia Right to life chapters began work this spring in requesting that their local county parties place this

non-binding "party" question on their local party ballots. Both Democrat and Republican parties were

approached. Butts county was the only county to succeed in getting both parties to cooperate and approve

the measure (Republicans 79% and the Democrats 72%). "There is no question that the people of Georgia

would pass a Personhood Amendment" IF given the chance!", says Dan Becker, President of Georgia

Right to Life. "The ball is now in the Legislature's hands to allow the people a voice on the most pressing human rights issue of the 21st century . . . deny them at your own peril."

In 2011, GRTL will use the results of the ballot to lobby the Georgia Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the 2012 general election ballot.

The counties in Georgia and their percentages are Bacon (88%), Banks (85%), Bartow (81%), Brantley (88%), Bulloch (84%), Burke (86%), Butts –Republican ballot (79%), Butts Democratic ballot (72%), Carroll (80%),

Chatham (78%), Cherokee (75%), Clayton (77%), Coffee (87%), Colquitt ( 85%), DeKalb (60%), Dooly (87%),

Georgia Voters say “Yes” to Personhood Amendment

Throughout the state yesterday, citizens had a chance to express their sentiment regarding the important policy question of when life begins and when it should be protected in law. Select metro counties throughout Georgia placed the following question on their respective ballots:

“Do you support an amendment to the Georgia State Constitution so as to provide that the paramount right to life is vested in each human being from their earliest biological beginning until natural death?”

The amendment passed overwhelmingly in all 46 counties. 323,474 total votes were cast and the average margin of voters approving the question was an amazing 81.1%!

Georgia Right to life chapters began work this spring in requesting that their local county parties place this

non-binding “party” question on their local party ballots. Both Democrat and Republican parties were approached. Butts county was the only county to succeed in getting both parties to cooperate and approve the measure (Republicans 79% and the Democrats 72% . “There is no question that the people of Georgia would pass

a Personhood Amendment” IF given the chance!”, says Dan Becker, President of Georgia Right to Life.

“The ball is now in the Legislature’s hands to allow the people a voice on the most pressing human rights issue of the 21st century . . . deny them at your own peril.”

The passage of the question sends a strong message to our legislature that Georgia is pro-life and that its voters desire an opportunity to vote on the issue of when life begins. In 2011, GRTL will use the results of the ballot

to lobby the Georgia Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the 2012 general election ballot.

A super-majority of each chamber of the Georgia General Assembly is required to place the Personhood Amendment

on the ballot. Once placed on the ballot, it would require a majority vote from the citizens of Georgia (50% plus 1 vote) for the item’s passage.

The following counties voted “YES” on the Personhood question on July 20, 2010:

Bacon, Banks, Bartow, Brantley, Bulloch, Burke, Butts (BOTH Republican and Democrat ballots), Carroll, Chatham, Cherokee, Clayton, Coffee, Colquitt, DeKalb, Dooly, Fannin, Fulton, Glynn, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Jasper, Jeff Davis, Jones, Lamar, Liberty, Lowndes, Murray, Muscogee, Paulding, Pickens, Pierce, Spalding, Thomas, Tift, Towns, Troup, Twigs, Union, Walker, Walton, Ware, Wilcox, and Worth.

Voters in Georgia's Fastest Growing Metro-Atlanta County Approve the Human Life Amendment

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., July 17 /Christian Newswire/ -- Forbes magazine recently released a list which ranked Georgia's Forsyth County as the 2nd best place in the nation to live "and get ahead." "If the pre-born could vote," said Daniel Becker, President of Georgia Right to Life, "I know they would agree."

Becker is referring to the outcome of a non-binding referendum on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 that allowed the voters

of the 8th fastest growing county in the nation to express their opinion on the following question, "Do you support

an amendment to the Georgia State Constitution so as to provide that the paramount right to life is vested in each human being from the moment of fertilization until a natural death?" Sixty-four percent approved this Human Life resolution. "This vote confirms our polling that 57% of all Georgians believe that Roe vs. Wade should be overturned" says Becker, "and sends a strong message to our legislature that the voters expect to see pre-born persons protected by law under our state Constitution."

In 2007, House Rep. Martin Scott introduced H. R. 536 which would define all human beings from fertilization

until natural death as persons and therefore protected under law. Georgia's Human Life Amendment was

blocked by Republican House Speaker Glenn Richardson and failed to pass out of the House Judicial Committee

in 2008, effectively thwarting the opportunity for Georgians to vote on H.R. 536 this fall. "Sixty-four percent of the vote in

a large urban, metro county like Forsyth should be viewed as a mandate from the people," says Becker. "If our lawmakers

needed a wake-up call, this is it!"

State Constitutional Amendments State Constitutional Amendments

[ excerpt, emphasis added ]

The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that states may find more expansive rights for the benefit of their citizens than are found under our U.S. Constitution. Constitutional Personhood attorney, Mr. Robert Muise [ CCL Note: The Thomas More Law Center is a Roman Catholic law firm] says,

"Additionally, the proposed constitutional amendment (Georgia) explicitly affirms, as a matter of state law, that “personhood” attaches at the moment of fertilization. It is a well-established principle of law that States possess the right to adopt their own constitutions with rights more expansive than those conferred by the federal constitution. See Prunyard Shopping Ctr. V Robins, 447 U.S. 74, 81 (1980)

( “affirming “the authority of the State to exercise its police power [and] its sovereign right to adopt in its own Constitution individual liberties more expansive that those conferred by the Federal Constitution”). And the right to life is the most basic and fundamental right, since death forecloses “the right to have rights.” See Furman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 238, 290 (1972) (Brennan, J., concurring)."
