LESSON PLAN - Manchester University

LESSON PLAN

Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences

Manchester College

Teacher: Mr. Nave Date of Lesson: Monday, October 11th Time Period: 9:15-9:45 am Grade Level: 1st grade Number of Students: 24 Lesson Focus: Underhand Throw Teaching Style: Problem Solving

C Students will demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

A Students will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

P Students will demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Performance Objectives

C The students will demonstrate an understanding of the underhand throw by answering questions relating to the teaching cues correctly 2 out of 3 times.

A The students will work together as a team by throwing their objects across the fence to the other team 3 out of 4 times.

P The students will demonstrate the underhand throw by tossing a bean bag into a hula hoop 5 out of 6 times.

Equipment/Materials 24 Polly Dots, 24 hula hoops, 24 bean bags, 1 gymnastics mat, many random soft objects that are safe enough to throw.

Skill Development (Incorporate Gardner and Bloom references)

Fitness Activity Polly Dots Touch-and-Go

Polly dots are spread throughout the area. On signal, students move and touch as many polly dots as possible with their hands. I will specify different body parts for the students to use in touching. Select different colors of polly dots, and I will use commands such as “Touch as many blue polly dots as possible with your elbow.”

Introduction/Set Induction

• Who has ever played softball, or cornhole before?

• Today we are going to learn the underhand toss.

• This skill will help you in many sports later on.

Introduce New Skill

Explanation/Demonstration I will explain the underhand toss in front of the students and stress the teaching cues of stepping with the opposite foot. (Gardner/ Visual Spatial) I will also have the a student come and demonstrate the skill in front of the class while I provide feedback of the teaching cues. (Gardner/ Bodily Kinesthetic)

Guided Practice Activity

How to get the bean bag in the hula hoop?

I will use a problem solving style to have the students discover ways to get the bean bag inside of the hula hoop from different distances. I will ask questions like “what is the best way to get the bean bags inside the hula hoops from the various distances” I will expect some students to throw overhand and I will expect many students to use the overhand throw or other methods of putting the bean bag into the hoop. Ultimately I will hope that they use the underhand throw to realize that it is much easier and effective to use that skill.

Group Activity Backyard

Different Objects and toys will be place on either side of a gymnastics mat that is standing straight up in the form of a wall or “backyard fence.” The students will practice their underhand tossing by throwing the objects or “garbage” across the wall into the other teams yard. Only under hand tossing will be accepted in this game.

Assessment (Form Attached)

Instructional Adjustments

Adaptations: these students will be able to stand as close as they want to the hula hoop to put the bean bag inside. If they are struggling with the underhand toss then they will be able to perform the skill without the stepping motion and just use the arm swing.

Enrichment: These students will be encouraged to stand further away from the hula hoop when trying to toss their bean bag inside.

Closure

• What foot do we step with if we are tossing with our right hand?

• What sports incorporate the underhand toss?
