We are seeking ambitious candidates to join us in this endeavour, supporting our drive to develop innovative solutions to flood risk and mitigation. Building on its leading competencies in flood resilience, climate change, logistics and engineering, the University of Hull is establishing a Flood Resilience Innovation Centre (FLIC) to provide Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) with a comprehensive R&D and innovation service comprising diagnostics and testing, product and process design, proof of concept, demonstrators, prototyping and manufacturing scale-up. The University is establishing an operational delivery Team (the FLIC Team) to manage and deliver a 3-year funded initiative targeting SMEs in a variety of sectors to enhance their productivity and competitiveness through collaborative product, service and process innovation projects. This activity will take place across the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (Humber LEP) area. SMEs in other parts of England with European ‘Transition’ area status may also benefit from the project. Collaborations may also involve large companies, other research organisations and agencies to maximise the benefit of investment in SME-led innovations. The activity that this role relates to is scheduled to complete by December 2021, but may be extended subject to ongoing funding.The FLIC Team is part-funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) programme for England 2014-2020. Funding has been committed for the full duration of the project. The team will operate from the University of Hull campus. The FLIC team will comprise: one Project Manager, one Business Development Manager, three Technology Research Managers, two Researchers, one Finance and Audit Officer and one Administration Officer. The team will operate independently but will co-ordinate with the academic faculties within the University that will provide additional innovation support to SMEs. There may also be close co-operative working with other innovation professionals to ensure alignment and integration of activity.FLIC Technology Research Managers will report to the FLIC Project Manager. They will be assigned to shortlisted projects and will identify, conduct and deliver the most appropriate blend of HEI collaborative activities to support SMEs in developing innovations to enhance flood resilience. The particular focus of the role will require the post-holder to have robust knowledge of either: 1. environmental sensing applications (e.g., turbulent flow visualisation and quantification, dynamic monitoring of object deformation under hydrodynamic stress); 2. human physiological stress monitoring (e.g., core, skin and body temperature monitoring, heart rate monitoring, accelerometer monitoring and interpretation); 3. MEMS and/or high-speed telecommunications technologies; or 4. artificial intelligence and/or big data approaches and their application to disaster risk modelling, supply-chain logistics or disaster response and evacuation logistics. The ability to draw on a network of relevant UK-based contacts (both public and private) would be advantageous.Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the postFLIC Technology Research Managers will work with the FLIC Business Development Manager to identify product, service and process innovation supporting flood resilience, mitigation, adaptation and response and ensure appropriate provision of expertise to regional companies to develop, implement and exploit R&D and innovation activities eligible for support under the project.Responsibilities will include: Overseeing the project shortlisting process and participating in the project selection panel to decide upon the most appropriate blend of HEI collaborative activities required to support, lead and deliver the innovation requirements of SMEs;Working with SMEs to agree an integrated package of R&D support, based on the technology mix and support interventions required;Project manage specific interventions.
