Student-Created Study Guide

Directions: This will be an on-going task that we will work on as we read The Odyssey. Each student will create his/her own study

guide of The Odyssey, page by page. This will not be collected until we are through reading The Odyssey, but we will work on it each

day we read. The final product will be a student-created book that will count as TWO TEST GRADES! It will not be hard if you follow

the steps below:

1. Independently or as a class, begin reading Homer’s The Odyssey. We will read the following chapters from The Odyssey: Sailing from Troy, the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops, the Land of the Dead, Scylla and Charybdis, the Cattle of the Sun God, the Return Home, and the Revenge of Odysseus.

2. After reading one full chapter, you will then either create a ONE-PAGER SUMMARY of that chapter OR you will create a VISUAL FLOW MAP of that chapter. Attached to this rubric is a sheet that tells you specifically which chapters require you to create a ONE-PAGER and which chapters require you to create a VISUAL FLOW MAP. I have attached examples for you to use as a guide.

I will establish a due date as we get closer to finishing our Odyssey reading. This assignment counts as a TEST grade. IT IS THE

RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH AND EVERY STUDENT TO KEEP UP WITH HIS / HER OWN WORK AND TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT ACCORDING TO THE

DIRECTIONS OF THE ASSIGNMENT. STUDENTS ARE NOT EXCUSED FROM ANY PART OF THIS ASSIGNMENT FOR ANY REASON, INCLDUING ABSENCES. Put

forth your best effort on this and make this a product that you will be proud to have displayed in our classroom! Thanks! – Mr.

Summary of Selection Read

Title of Section: “Sailing From Troy”

The setting of this section is ten years after the Trojan War on the island of Phaeacia, which is ruled by Alcinous. Odysseus, who has escaped from the goddess Calypso, needs a ship to continue on his journey. Alcinous offers Odysseus a ship provided Odysseus tells about adventures. Odysseus explains how he was held by Calypso because Calypso loved him. However, Odysseus never loved her because he loves his wife and child. He wants to return to his homeland, Ithaca.

Odysseus goes on to DESCRIBE how after the Trojan War he and his men attacked Ismarus. Odysseus EXPLAINS how he tried to get his men to return to the ship, but they refused. Before Odysseus could get his men back to their ship, the army of Cicones attacked back and Odysseus lost many men in the battle. By the time Odysseus and his men were back on their ship, sailing away from Ismarus, they had suffered a great loss of men.
