QUALITY ALERT - Nexteer

Nexteer QUALITY ALERTResponse RequiredDate: May 2013 TO: All Nexteer SuppliersFROM: Lois Alverson, Director of Supplier QualitySUBJECT: Potential Mishandling of Start-up ComponentsBackground:Nexteer experienced a significant quality issue with one of our major OEM customers. Non-conforming product was manufactured during the start-up of a plastic molding process. Suspect product was mixed with known good material due to an intermittent diverter tray that failed to segregate known good material from suspect material. This type of failure could also occur in several other processes (rubber molding, die casting, stamping, etc.) during the set-up or start-up operation.Effective Immediately: All suppliers providing components to Nexteer with Safety Related Characteristics (Safety QCI’s, Safety KPC’s) where there is a potential for this failure to occur must complete the following steps by July 30, 2013:Action ItemCompleted (Y/N)Actions Taken (if necessary)Review PFMEA’s / Control Plans/ Work Instructions to verify overall effectiveness of your current controls. For critical characteristic acceptance testing or error-proofing ensure that the machine logic treats the incoming component as “Suspect” until proven "Good." The default should always be set to “Reject” the part.Verify all operators / technicians performing inspections & standardized work elements are properly trained.Verify Layered Audits include verification of controls for critical characteristics. For processes which generate critical characteristics verify that the Preventative Maintenance items are identified & comprehensive to eliminate the potential to accept suspect or reject material. All above action items are to be approved/reviewed by your Plant Manager. Please return a signed & completed copy of this document to your Nexteer Supplier Quality Engineer no later than July 30, 2013.
