PEER REVIEW FOR BROCHURE DESIGN - Miami University

Peer Review for Website design Reviewed by__ ________________

Examine the website for the following issues.

Repetition

In what specific ways is repetition incorporated?

Is the page grid the same throughout the webpage?

Are there other places repetition should be incorporated?

Are there other repetition issues? (Is the use of repetition effective?)

Alignment

In what ways does the website incorporate good alignment?

Are the navigation, banner, and text all vertically and horizontally aligned?

Proximity/Organization

Is like information together?

Is unlike information visually separated? If it is separated by space, would it be better separated by a different page?

Does the heading accurately describe the information in the paragraphs beneath it?

Do the pictures next to a section of text support that text—does the picture have anything to do with the section?

Are headings closer to text they describe than the previous section or picture? (In other words, is there plenty of space between sections?)

Contrast

How has contrast been used to create visual interest in the website (colors, thick/thin lines, etc.)?

Is the text easy to read on the background color? (Background body text color should be white or light cream—no bright yellow!)

Do the headings incorporate a “dark” font and the body text a slightly lighter font to create contrast?

Has contrast been used effectively enough to make the hierarchy of headings clear?

Audience

What visual cues does the website include to orient the users to how they should navigate the site?

What are the different entry points the website makes available to the user? (How does the website provide a generous interface? A la Wysocki)

Have you included features that encourage college students to return to the website? A la McGonigal

Navigation

Do the link names clearly indicate the type of information the page will discuss? (Did you find the information you expected to when you followed each link?)

Is the navigation consistent and obvious (is all navigation viewable without scrolling—no new links at the bottom of the page)?

Are link names in alphabetical order except for home and site map?

Accessibility

Do all images have alt tags?

Can fonts be resized to fit the users needs? (go to view > text size > larger and see if the text on the page gets larger).

Do the designers avoid using “click here” for any in text links?

Are PDFs labeled and approximate size listed?

Purpose

Is the purpose of the website clear without scrolling on the first page? What does the purpose of the website seem to be?

Corporate Image and Color

Are the colors muted except for where the designer wants to draw a single point of emphasis? Bright colors are especially problematic on websites because they are harsh on the eye.

Professional appearance

Does the heading/banner require less than 1/3 page (without scrolling?) If the banner takes up more space, you need to revise the banner so that the audience can get the gist of the text on each page without scrolling.)

Do all the elements on the page work together or do some elements look less integrated?

What, if anything, makes the website look professional?

What, if anything, makes the website look less professional?

Emotional Connection

What, if anything creates an emotional connection with the audience?

Would you return the website?

In what ways does the interface show that you value the contributions of the user? (think either psychological interactivity or Johnson-Eilola’s wishlist).

Are there grammatical or mechanical errors or typos?
