First read through the essay for an initial impression. Read through without concern for mechanics or any other errors.
Then read through the paper a second time, paying more attention to its effectiveness and details. DO NOT MAKE MARKS ON THIS PAPER
Imagine the subject and try to understand the perspective that the profile offers on its subject.
What is YOUR impression? What is the profile’s purpose or perspective or angle on the subject, as best you understand it?
Analyze the Effectiveness of the Organization. Is this a narrative or descriptive organization (or a combination of the two)? Are there time markers or other transitions in evidence? At what points in the essay would some of these help?
Look again at the beginning. Does it capture your attention? Can you think of a detail elsewhere in the draft that might be more effective? A quotation, fact, anecdote?
Look again at the ending. Does it leave you hanging? Seem too abrupt? Oversimplify the subject? If so, can you think of another way of ending?
Evaluate the Writer’s Role. Has the writer adopted a participant-observer or detached-observer role? If you see a combination of the two, are both roles needed? Should this role be changed/clarified?
Analyze the Description of Person/Event. Where does the essay seem most interesting? Where does it seem in need of details? Can you imagine what is being described? Identify areas that would be improved by adding details, action, etc.
Assess the Quality and Presentation of the Information. Where did you learn something truly interesting, surprising, or useful? Are there words/concepts that need clarification?
After considering the sentence structure and mechanics, please offer at least 3 suggestions (see back of paper) for improvement, but again, DO NOT change anything on this paper. You are not a proofreader. You are not to try to make someone else’s paper into your own. You are merely offering suggestions for true revision. There is a difference between revising and editing. If you see any sentences that you suspect/know to be major sentence errors, you may label MSE in the margins, but those are the only marks you are to make on this essay.
