Profile Essay

Profile Essay

Start by reading the basic requirements for a profile found in Norton Field Guide to Reading and Writing Ch. 16 pp. 191-204. Then read a sample profile choosing from “On Campus, It’s One Big Commercial” (pp.. 837-47) or “Marlen Esparza: Going the Distance” (pp. 848-56) from Ch. 63. For the chosen sample, you must answer (in your journal) the questions “Engaging with the Text” that follow the essay and then follow the assignment in #5 “Writing” for your own essay (adapting as needed for the high school community).

This profile must include dialogue and/or details to create a dominant impression of the person/place.

The paper should be 3 ½ pages minimum with correct MLA heading, margins, font, header, etc. Do not exceed 5 pages.

Prewriting of ideas is due 10/28-29, and a complete rough draft (typed) is due on Tuesday, November 3. We will do a peer review in class. The final draft of the essay (along with strong evidence of all parts of the writing process) is due on Friday, November 6.

The total assignment is worth 75 points.

• The paper itself is 50 points

• Sufficient prewriting and a first draft are 10 points

• Completing a peer review is 5 points

• Evidence of true revision accounts for 10 points.

Failing to take the essay through the process means that you begin with a 67% on the essay.

Adequately completing all of the steps means that you begin with 33% towards an A.
