My Background In 2000, I started an online automotive parts company. This is a business that I created from scratch from the ground up. I ultimately sold this company in 2009 (more on this later).

In the 14 years that I owned and ran my online company we sold over $100 Million in products via just about every channel imaginable on the Internet. We sold directly via over 14 websites, we had 2 different branded eBay stores, we sold via Amazon (we sold our Private Labeled Products and we sold auto parts retail as well), and we sold via other channels such as as well.

I started my online company specifically to sell automotive trailer hitches (yes, you read that right ? I said trailer hitches).

For those of you not familiar with what a trailer hitch is ? it is the huge piece of steel underneath the back of your vehicle that you would use to haul a trailer, haul boats, etc.

And, if you bought a trailer hitch between the years 2000 ? 2009 here in the United States, and if you bought that trailer hitch via the Internet then the odds are over 85% that you bought it from me through one of my websites, or one of the other channels we sold through.

I do not say this to brag, only to give you some perspective into how something that can start relatively small can grow into something beyond even your wildest dreams.

And, isn't that really the point? We all want to own our own business. We all want financial stability in our lives. We all want to be our own bosses and be in charge of our own lives ? don't we? If you answered yes, then you are in the right place and you need to keep reading.

I owned this business with my father. We started the business out of a retail Truck Accessories / Trailer Hitch Installation shop in Charlotte, North Carolina. The name of the retail business was A & B Truck And Trailer (we sold it in early 2001 so I do not know if it is still in business).

When we launched our first website in 2000 to sell trailer hitches our original goal was to sell only 9 hitches a day.

We had figured that if we sold this many per month then we would generate an extra $45,000+ a month in sales and a large percentage of that would be pure profit. This profit margin would help us grow all of our businesses.

In fact, funny story ? my dad set up his computer to "ding" every time we got an email telling us we had a new order.

At the time, we were working out of a space that was about 10 x 10 feet wide (it had both of our desks in that space so were wedged in there to say the least). This working space was a small shed that was out in back of our retail business.

And, it quickly got to the point that the "dinging" from my dad's computer got real obnoxious and we had to turn off the "ding" sound because we could not get anything done because his computer was making too much noise.

One day we just looked at each other and we "knew" - we knew we were going to be successful. We had passed our goal of selling only 9 hitches a day so quickly we were both shocked.

We knew we were on to something with this new Internet business we had started. We started to make plans to expand the online business.

In the next 6-8 months we sold the retail stores and we focused solely on the online business.

By the end of 2000 & the beginning of 2001, we were easily selling over 100 hitches and trailer hitch accessories each and every day.

We were growing exponentially. We moved offices twice in the next few years. We quickly passed $1, $2, $3, and even $5 million in sales.

By 2003 and 2004 we were shipping over 300-400 hitches and other auto parts each and every day. We were growing by leaps and bounds.

I spent time focusing on how I could improve our operations by putting in customer service systems and shipping systems so that we could stay on top of all of the orders that were coming in via our websites. We also scaled our business by branding our sites. We had over 5 sites that were branded differently depending on what type of trailer hitch somebody wanted to buy. If they wanted a Draw-Tite hitch or Reese trailer hitch we sent them to sites that were branded as such. This was one of our websites:

! We also scaled our business by moving into new and different lines of automotive parts. We ultimately ended up selling brake parts and brake pads, bike racks, car alarms, truck accessories, RV towing products, cargo carriers, car side mirrors and a whole bunch of other automotive related products.
