SUMMARY OF DUTIES:Assistant Conductors/Passenger Conductors are required to work a variety of hours within a 24/7 transportation environment. They assist the Conductor in the safe movement of trains by adhering to applicable operating rules/practices. They ensure all revenue documents (cash, tickets, passes) are collected/verified in accordance with designated tariffs. Assistant conductors ensure the safety of passengers and crew by adhering to strict safety rules. Assistant Conductors/Passenger Conductors must be able to function independently utilizing clear and effective verbal communication skills to interact with passengers, crew members, and others jointly responsible for safe and efficient train movements and customer service. They will be required to work in either a passenger or non-passenger operation (including yard duty and work trains). Assistant Conductors must maintain an understanding of Operating Rules and Practices including Physical Characteristics, Safety, Air Brake, Electrical Instructions, Equipment Trouble-Shooting, and Emergency Procedures. The position requires them to be able to physically move between and around train cars while the train is in motion. Assistant Conductors/Passenger Conductors may be required to perform the following: control a trains movement while in reverse, manually switch out cars, mechanically inspect rolling stock and rail, assist in checking the trains air brakes, conduct pre-trip inspections, ensure the train remains on schedule, be alert to wayside signals, communicate via hand signals, and ensure the overall safety of crew and passengers. They also must be able to move and lift heavy air hoses, electrical cables, steel coupler components, and perform other manual labor activities. They may also be required to safely ride the side of train equipment, getting on and off equipment, as required. Assistant Conductors/Passenger Conductors will have to submit various reports to record movement delays, unusual occurrences, passenger inconveniences, and mechanical defects. Assistant Conductor/Passenger Conductors help passengers board and detrain as well as give instructions on travel and connections to and from their destination. They must be able to make clear customer service announcements sometimes in emergency situations. They ensure passengers are safe and orderly. They must have an excellent customer service attitude. They will be required to interact and communicate professionally with passengers and co-workers under all types of circumstances. They must demonstrate a demeanor and well-groomed appearance that conveys to passengers a sense of competence and complete professionalism. Must understand and comply with NJ TRANSIT’s Uniform & Grooming Standards when engaged in performing passenger service.WORK EXPERIENCE:Potential Candidates should have experience working as a team, often as a lead, under stressful circumstances, in time sensitive environments, and with a customer service mentality. They should be capable in cash handling as well as with basic mechanical duties. Prior supervisory or lead experience and customer service required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Applicants for the position of Assistant Conductor/Passenger Conductor must be willing and able to: Work in all types of weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, snow, and rain. Perform duties in an environment requiring physical agility in order to quickly and safely get off/on train equipment, manipulate self between cars, bend, reach, stoop, easily and safely ride the side of trains, and lift a variety of equipment. They must report for work on short notice (4 hrs. notice) and work weekends and holidays. Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination and drug screening. Submit to and pass periodic medical examinations as well as random drug and alcohol screenings. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Candidates are expected to have basic abilities in using various hand tools, including sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc. They should be able to perform basic mechanical repairs and maintenance. Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information is required. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and/or to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and/or to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems. Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form. Assistant Conductors/Passenger Conductors need to be able to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base. They need to be able to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. Their daily responsibilities require them to talk to and effectively communicate with co-workers, yard personnel, crew, engineers, railroad officials and others in a clear, concise, courteous, efficient and professional manner. They are required to pass a strict training program and required annual testing.ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:If selected, the incumbent will be required to successfully complete a 13 month training course including classroom instruction and fieldwork followed by extensive qualifying and on the job training to obtain Passenger Conductor Certification. After which a 90 day probationary period will begin. Failure to meet training standards during the training and probationary period will result in the incumbents application for employment being rejected and terminated from employment. Candidates must have a good safety record and prior satisfactory job performance. This position requires candidates to complete and satisfactorily pass a physical capacity assessment and may also be required to pass various technical and/or cultural fit assessments relevant to this position. Annual Operating Rules testing and Periodic Medical exams are also required. RATE OF PAY:Training rate (currently paid for 40 hours per week at $21.37 per hour straight time) this applies until the completion of training. Thereafter, specific terms of NJ Transits current agreement with the United Transportation Union will apply.Trainees are compensated for 40 hours per week at straight time. The trainee’s rate of pay is based on a wage progression in the UTU Agreement, beginning at 70% and increasing by 5% after each 6 month period is completed. The entry rate is currently $21.37. UNION DUES:All Trainees will be required to join the United Transportation Union within 90 days of starting in the position. There is a non-refundable initiation fee of $100.00 and monthly dues are approximately $75.00.*** THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY HAS A RESIDENCY LAW *** ................
