Program Description

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for managing the 2016 Hyde Park Green Team Youth Jobs and Environmental Stewardship Program. The Green Team program will employ 12 Hyde Park youth ages 15-18 and two Crew Leaders ages 20-24. The Team will work 25 hours per week Monday-Friday from July 5-August 13 with a possible extension to August 19. In the urban wilds youth will build and maintain trails, remove invasive plants, prune trees and remove trash. Youth may also tend and harvest a vegetable garden. They will conduct door-to-door outreach to neighbors to engage them in urban wild stewardship. In Hyde Park’s Cleary/Logan Square business district youth will pick up trash, participate in various beautification projects, and conduct antilittering outreach to businesses and younger children. Youth will travel between work sites by bicycle, learning road safety skills and gaining confidence in city riding.

The Team will spend 30% of its time in job readiness training including proper workplace conduct, personal banking, resume writing and interviewing. They will learn about community service careers through workshops with the Boston Police and Fire Departments and the USDA Forest Service. Youth will participate in educational field trips including a work exchange at Brookwood Community Farm and a hike in the Blue Hills to learn about trail flora and fauna and to visit the Weather Observatory.
