2020 Orientation Advisor Assignment Description

Supervising Department: Office of Student Success/Orientation

Length of Appointment: Summer 2020 (May 11 – June 24th)

General Statement of Duties

The Orientation Advisor (OA) serves all 12 freshman summer orientation programs and may also assist with transfer and late summer freshman orientation programs. The staff member provides excellent care and support as new students and their families navigate the campus, academic, and campus life expectations and responsibilities.

Reporting Relationship

The Orientation Advisor will report to the Associate Director of the Office of Student Success or their designee, including members of the Leadership Team.

Minimum Qualifications and Additional Requirements

● Must be a Central Michigan University faculty or staff member.

● Must receive approval from unit Director and direct supervisor.

● Must be available for the entire duration of appointment (dates outlined below).

● Must demonstrate interest in learning academic and campus life requirements.

● Must demonstrate an interest in learning student development/transition theory.

● Must be interested in supervising student Orientation Mentor staff members.

Responsibilities

• Co-lead a small group of new students or family members through orientation;

• Supervise 1-2 Orientation Mentors and offer guidance to full student leadership;

• Advise new students/families navigating academic/campus life expectations;

• Offer excellent service to new students and their families/guests of students;

• Incorporate understanding of student development and transition theory into working with new students and their families/supporters;

• Attendance at all orientation training dates, and summer orientation dates.

Specific Date and Time Commitment:

• Staff Introduction (2 hours)

o Tues., March 17th, 8:00 – 10:00 a.m., Merrill Residential Restaurant

• Orientation Advisor Training (4 hours total)

o Tues., April 24th & April 28th, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., Bovee UC Mackinaw Room

• Advisor and Mentor training (36 hours total)

o May 12 – May 15, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Bovee UC

o May 18 – May 2, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Bovee UC

• Freshman Orientation Sessions (7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

o May 26, 27, 28

o June 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24

• Availability Permitting (1-2 Advisors needed from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.)

o July 9

o July 23

o August 6, 26

Compensation:

The Orientation Advisor position is a professional development assignment. By participating as an Orientation Advisor, the supervising unit agrees to maintain current compensation and benefit package for the interested staff member. Student Success/Orientation will provide meals for various training and work dates, required uniforms, and training opportunities.

Appointment Process:

• Departmental Director discusses opportunity with eligible staff members.

• Interested staff member receives supervisory approval below.

• Interested staff member formally expresses interest for Advisor position by emailing this assignment request form to orientation@cmich.edu or turning into Ronan Hall 250 by January 25th, 2020.

• Associate Director for Student Success/Orientation reviews interested staff member assignment requests, determines need and departmental representation, confirms appointment by February 15th, 2020.
