The family is very poor and must move constantly to find work. They are migrant workers who pick crops for farms. The father and two brothers have to work in very hot conditions to make money. One can tell the family is poor because all of their belongings fit in their car. They live in a shack but then move to a garage. Panchito, his brother, and his father must sleep under a tree outside the garage because there isn’t enough room inside.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sample notes for Paragraph #2:Evidence of setting details in the storyWhat does it cause or effect? (character/plot)*strawberry fields aren’t growing as much*strawberry season is over*sharecropper is unhappy because not getting as much money*sharecropper sending workers home from farm for last time*packed boxes at house*Panchito is sad because he will move again (no work left)*moving and knows what is to come*living in gross garage in Fresno (dirt floor, termites)*not enough room, dad, Panchito and brother sleep outside*almost 100 degrees on the farm*Panchito gets hot, drinks too much water and feels sickSample Paragraph #2:In The Circuit, the setting is important. The strawberry season is over, and there aren’t as many strawberries growing. This effects the sharecropper; he is unhappy because he isn’t getting as much money. Since the family moved to Fresno, CA, they now live in a garage with termites and a dirt floor. This effects Panchito and his family because there is not enough room and Panchito, his dad and brother have to sleep outside. Panchito has to stay in the hot temperature to keep working work to earn money and this causes him to get sick. In conclusion, the setting is important because it effects the characters’ lives. Student Example for Paragraphs 1 and 2Thunder Rolling in the MountainsEmily LabroliSetting Analysis????? ?????In Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O’Dell and Elizabeth Hall, Sound of Running Feet and her tribe live in Wallowa Lake in Lapwai. The tribe keeps getting attacked by Blue Coats (white people) and is forced to leave their peaceful home to save themselves. They are Indians who must shoot animals and pick crops to eat. The tribe’s warriors must fight in very cold conditions to save the tribe. One can tell the tribe is in danger because the warriors fight day and night and a lot of women and children are getting killed. The warriors and chiefs must share tipis because there isn’t enough room for each person to have their own room in the tipis.????????? In Thunder Rolling in the Mountains, the setting is important to the characters and the plot. The weather is growing cold and most of the warriors are dying. This affects the tribe, they are scared because without a lot of warriors and chiefs, the Blue Coats may win the battle. Since the tribe moved from Wallowa Lake in Lapwai, to White Bird Canyon, to Land of the Spirit Fountains, along Dusty trails, to the Old Lady’s Country, the tribe is now getting followed by Blue Coats. This affects Sound of Running Feet and her tribe because they are running out of food and the old men, children, women, chiefs, and warriors are being killed in their sleep and in war. Finally, during war almost everyone escapes to Bear Paw Mountains and most of the tribe is saved (Sound of Running Feet never saw her boyfriend, father, mother, or sister ever again after the Assiniboins killed her boyfriend and the Blue Coats killed almost everyone else in the tribe.). Therefore, the setting is important because it affects the character’s lives. ................
