Harper's OITNB Thesaurus 3

Introduction

This thesaurus of terminology is intended for first-time and multi-time viewers for the Netflix Original Series, Orange is the New Black (OITNB). It is intended to provide a list of controlled vocabulary about the series to make it easier to follow and understand. Because the show in its entirety contains such a varied amount of characters, the thesaurus compiler only selected characters who have the most prominent storylines or who appear in the most amount of episodes. The terms selected from the series are from the first four seasons of the show (20132016), and after the fifth season is released in 2017, this thesaurus may require an update.

User's Guide

The OITNB terminology used in this thesaurus has been divided by a hierarchical display consisting of six broad categories. These categories include the following: characters, Federal Women's Correctional Facility in Litchfield, NY (shortened to Litchfield), jobs in prison, paraphernalia, prison politics, and social characteristics.

To see how a term is related to another term within the hierarchical display on pages 7-9, look under one of the broad categories that have been previously listed and note how many hyphens the word contains. For example, "cell C block" has three hyphens, and falls directly under the two-hyphened word "dormitories", which then falls under the broad one-hyphen category of "Litchfield." Cell C block is therefore a narrow term (NT) for dormitory, and dormitory is a NT for Litchfield. Litchfield is a broad term (BT) for dormitory, and dormitory is also a BT for Cell C block. An example entry of how to interpret this statement will follow.

Fair warning: spoilers may be contained within the character descriptions, but intentional vagueness within these descriptions are applied as to not ruin it for first-time viewers of the Netflix Original Series.
