TEACHER’S COPY/ANSWER KEY TEACHER’S COPY/ANSWER KEYEnglish Language Arts, Parts of Speech Unit 5, Pronouns, Lesson 9 Worksheet: The Demonstrative Pronoun. As you know, pronouns serve a variety of functions, depending on their case—nominative, objective or possessive. This worksheet asks you to work toward building an understanding of the use of the demonstrative pronouns, words you have seen previously under the guise of demonstrative adjectives. These are the words this, that, these, and those. As with their use as demonstrative adjectives, this and that are singular and take a singular verb complement; these and those are plural and take, obviously, a plural verb complement. This and these refer to objects or people near you, and that and those refer to people at a distance. Like other words that share use as adjectives, the demonstrative pronoun does not precede and modify a noun (which defines an adjective, after all), but rather precede a verb. Their use looks like this:This is my life (the demonstrative pronoun this precedes the singular verb is). These are my friends (the demonstrative pronoun these precedes the plural verb are). That is my apartment building (that precedes the singular verb is). Those are the neighbors’ houses (those precedes the plural verb are). Now, you try it.Classwork: in these modified cloze exercises, place the appropriate demonstrative pronoun in the blank, given the sense of the sentence.(This or That) is the best way to get to Soho.Considering your resume, (this) job is perfect for you.(These or Those) are my misgivings about your plans to hold a party for the zombies.(This or That) is ******’s total inventory of cans of whupass.(These) are the brass knuckles ***** uses to administer beatdowns.Given the state of the economy, (this or that) is a fairly good job offer.(Those) positions have been filled.***** had to admit, (this or that) is the best place to get a slice of pizza near HSE&F.(That) is my final answer.
