3-4 or 5-8 = paper has elements of “poor” and “average.”
5-6 or 9-12/Average = accomplishes the goals of the assignment generally; topic is evident; supporting detail is average (but not excellent and clear); understanding of topic and audience is evident; paragraphs are mostly focused; transitions between sentences and paragraphs are generally good; mostly appropriate word choice; variety in sentence style; quotes/paraphrases are mostly handled well; proper use of quotes and citations; few errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
7-8 or 13-16 = paper has elements of “average” and “excellent.”
9-10 or 17-20/Excellent = Fully accomplishes goals of the assignment; thesis is clear; well developed ideas and paragraphs; details are accurate and appropriate for audience; evidence of well-thought out organization; paragraphs are focused; strong transitions between sentences and paragraphs; strong and appropriate word choice; interesting and vivid language; sentence variety; quotes/paraphrases are handled well; proper use of quotes and citations; no errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
