SEARCHING COLLECTIONS IN LVA'S NEW DISCOVERY LAYER In the Library's former catalog, searching for certain collections (Land Office, Confederate Pensions, etc.) could be initiated separately from the rest of the catalog. While that specific functionality is no longer available, you are still able to limit your search results based on database. If you already know how to do this, jump on in to the new search page. If you would like a little tutorial, read on.... Say you want to find all records for Chaffins in the Revolutionary War digital collections (Bounty Land, Land Office Military Certificates, etc.) Step 1: Do a general search for "Chaffin"

Step 2: Use "Facets" to refine your results After completing a general search, you will see results for the formerly separate databases on the left side bar under "Collections."

If you "show more" you'll see all collections with results related to your search.

SEARCHING COLLECTIONS IN LVA'S NEW DISCOVERY LAYER

To narrow the results to a particular results set, hover over the collection name and check the box that appears on the left. If you like, you can select more than one collection. Click "Apply Filter" at the bottom of the screen:

Your result set is now limited to items in the collections selected:

Hover over the collection name in your active filters list and click on the lock icon. You are now set to search exclusively in that collection during your search session until you unlock it. Remove filters to return to your original results set.
