Provincial Synod of Canada Position Description

Position: Member of Provincial Council

Eligibility: All clergy and lay members of Synod

Nominated by: Diocesan Caucuses - Each diocese nominates one cleric or one lay person ? according to a schedule set out in the Constitution- for the Provincial Council, and one substitute of the same order. Nominations are ratified by the Provincial Synod.

At this Synod the Diocesan Caucuses from the Dioceses of: Central Newfoundland, Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island and Montreal shall nominate one clerical member and one clergy substitute each for Provincial Council.

At this Synod the Diocesan Caucuses from the Dioceses of: Eastern Newfoundland & Labrador Western Newfoundland, Fredericton and Quebec shall nominate one lay member and one lay substitute each for Provincial Council.

In addition, Provincial Synod youth elects two youth lay members to the Council. In practice these are nominated by the youth members of Synod.

In addition to a commitment to the life and work of the Province and Provincial Synod, desirable qualities for Council members include knowledge of the Constitution and Canons of the Provincial Synod, and of the General Synod, as well as their home dioceses. Council members should be prepared to serve on Provincial committees or task forces, if requested. They should be prepared to devote sufficient time to preparing for annual Council meetings, and to attend these meetings.
