16. MAJOR RESEARCH INTERESTS
My overall interest is in unexplained visual loss/symptomatology caused by undetected or unknown systemic disease, such as vasculitis, autoimmune diseases, and sarcoidosis. We have published papers on diagnosing autoimmune optic neuropathy, on how to detect occult sarcoidosis presenting as neuro-ophthalmic disease, and on neuro-ophthalmic signs of vasculitis. I have also published on treatment strategies for these entities, including the first use of thalidomide for neurosarcoid (Celgene- Federal Drug Administration, Compassionate Use of Thalidomide for Neurosarcoid, 1998, IND 55,321).
The other area of interest has been educational techniques in ophthalmology. I have, with Dr. Jay Wisnicki, developed the patient simulation paradigm that was used in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s ProVision interactive CD series, as well as chaired their development of web-based simulations. I am one of three grantees on the NOVEL (Neuro-ophthalmology Virtual Education Library) project funded by the National Library of Medicine. In this project, we are linking educational assets (videos, audio lectures, still images, PowerPoint lectures...) to a core curriculum that we have developed at the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society (NANOS).
