AP Test-taking Tips

Multiple Choice (67%)

1. You will have 70 minutes to answer 100 questions.

2. On average, you will need to be able to answer 1 question every 42 seconds. Do not spend too much time on any one question. Move on and return to the more difficult questions after you have answered the questions that come more easily to you. Typically, the questions become more difficult as the test unfolds.

3. There is no penalty for guessing, therefore it is imperative that you answer all questions.

4. Beware of the fatigue factor. 100 questions is a lot. If you feel yourself losing focus, close your eyes for a moment, regain your concentration, and then proceed. It will do you no good to read questions when you are not focused.

5. Don’t panic if you do not know the answers to some of the questions. No one, including me, will answer them all correctly. Target 75% correct.

Written Response Essays (33%)

1. You will have 50 minutes to write two written response essays. You will not have any choice of essays. Use all of your time. Go back and add details (names of people, experiments, etc.) if you have extra time. Proofread and polish your essay so it reads smoothly. Don’t irritate the reader.

2. Read both questions first and briefly jot notes on the exam as you go. Your mind will unconsciously work on the second essay while you write your answer to the first.

3. Keep track of time and pace yourself. Bring a watch and be sure to move to the second essay at roughly the midpoint of your time. Not finishing an essay is a costly mistake.

4. Work quickly and precisely. Remember, you will not be penalized for incorrect information as long as the correct information is there. Don’t be afraid to guess if you are not sure –the shotgun approach.

5. At all costs, keep your head and do not panic. If parts of the essay seem obscure and difficult to you, they are likely to be obscure and difficult for everyone.

6. Additional information to keep in mind regarding the essay:

A. Write a brief introduction, write in mini-paragraphs, and do not include a conclusion

B. Do not try to define a term by using the term

C. Correct information must be in the appropriate context to earn credit

D. Incorrect information is permissible, but direct contradictions are not
