Psychology: Learning - Key Question (AJW)

Key Question: Should our school’s pastoral curriculum include more about the impact of violent video games on young people? We are going to present our work on this as a TV news programme item which we can show to Mrs Morgan, Head of the Pastoral Curriculum. You need to create a storyboard and a script for your TV news item; a story board shows pictures to represent what the viewers will see while each bit of the script is delivered.Your news item will have three parts:DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE (4): You need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of this issue in society. It should be journalistic in style and does not need to link to any psychological theory, studies or concepts. Use the newspaper articles and TV programme that I have linked on google classroom to write a paragraph of about 100 words covering 4 main themes that link to this question. This summary of the issue could include information about…acts of violence that have been linked to violent video game userestrictions and age limits on video game usecountries that have banned violent videos games, e.g. China (although the ban has now been partially lifted)the American Psychological Association report and subsequent open letter signed by 200 academics which essentially demonstrates that many psychologists believe that violent video games are not a risk factor in determining future aggressive behaviouranything else interesting that you can find!A BRIEF INTERVIEW WITH A PUPIL WHO PLAYS VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES (6)You will need to come up with about three questions that you can ask your gamer. These questions should be open questions so that the person can talk freely about their gaming. You can then go and find someone who pays these games and video your interview; you should also transcribe their answers as we will use this in a future piece of work for you to learn about content analysis.THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE This section of the programme is to be presented as an interview with two psychologists; the interviewer will ask the first psychologist (A) to explain his/her thoughts about whether we should be overly concerned about young people playing violent video games. S/he will provide explanations based on our topic work which suggest we should be worried. The interviewer will then talk to the second psychologist (B) who will counter these arguments and explain why the psychologist’s A’s arguments do not give the full picture (this could come from criticizing the studies cited as evidence and giving conflicting evidence about the merits of some video games, see the Horizon programme).I would expect to see ou referencing:Social Learning TheoryBandura’s studiesBastian’s studyevidence from the BBC Horizon programmethere may be article in the Psychology Review archive which are helpful; Dr Webb can help you to access these ................
