Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology

Project 2 Instructions

July 21, 2007

This project follows closely a similar project employed Dr. Thad Leffingwell, Ph.D. at Oklahoma State in the graduate course entitled “Behavioral Therapy Seminar Series”

Project Overview. In this project, the student will develop a 1-1.5 hour workshop, modeled as a “beginner workshop” at a conference, on an empirically-supported treatment or assessment technique. The workshop will contain a theoretical and technical overview of the treatment, a review of empirical studies supporting the treatment, and a case example or vignette. All students will follow the workshop format template described below. A table of empirical findings and a consumer-oriented fact sheet about the treatment should be developed as part of the presentation. The student will then present this workshop in class. Students are encouraged to make use of additional faculty expertise in completing this assignment.

Workshop Format

1) Theoretical Overview. The presentation should begin with a brief theoretical/conceptual overview of the theory supporting the treatment and the technical components of the treatment (20-30 minutes)

2) Empirical Support. The next section of the presentation (20-30 minutes)should provide a brief review of the published empirical support for the treatment. You should include a review of the current status of the literature (how many studies have been done and of which type). You should comment on the quality of the studies that have been conducted, and summarize the literature findings. This portion should conclude with a statement of clinical significance of the findings (e.g., with NNT or NNH data) and a brief overview of what is known about the use of the treatment with different cultural groups. Presenters should provide a summary of reviewed studies in the form of a “quick-scan table” (see example posted on website) and a consumer-oriented fact sheet (see example posted on website) to summarize their major findings. Treatment manuals are available from multiple sources but a good starting reference that provides sources for manuals is:

3) Technique examples/simulations. The final portion (20-30 minutes) of the presentation should provide a few examples of treatment techniques. These may be generated from transcripts contained in treatment manuals or may be created from scratch by the student. One such simulation should be the presentation of the therapeutic rationale to the patient. These can be prepared beforehand using videotape or can be enacted “live” during the presentation.

Handouts

1) Powerpoint slide handouts from student presentation

2) Quick-Scan Table

3) Fact Sheet
