Target Shooting: It Only Takes a Spark

IDAHO – Due to the unseasonable hot and dry weather that has plagued the State of Idaho this summer; the results have left grasses and vegetation in prime condition for wildland fires. Federal and state firefighters have been battling many fires already this season that have burned many thousand acres. Some of these fires have been attributed to unsafe target shooting practices.

The slightest spark could cause a large wildland fire. A ricochet from ammunition on nearby rocks or other material can ignite grasses leading to a wildfire.

Fire prevention officers and land stewards are asking that target shooters always use safe practices when using public lands. Do your part and be responsible:

▪ Choose locations with little or no vegetation.

▪ Bring soft targets with you; avoid shooting rocks, metal or pressurized containers.

▪ Be aware of the type of ammunition you are using; certain types of ammunition may increase sparks.

▪ Tracers are illegal to use on public lands in Idaho.

▪ Consider going to a target range for safety.

▪ Protect yourself with ear and eye protection.

▪ Remove your litter and used shell casings.

▪ Keep Idaho Green!
