ISSUE No. 2 MARCH – APRIL 2013

Patron: Wal Eastman OAM

2013 Committee

Karen Armstrong, President; Solveig Hamilton, Vice President, Robyn Mathison Secretary/Treasurer Jen Gibson &John Biggs, Committee Members

Forthcoming Meetings

Friends Meeting House, 395 Argyle Street, North Hobart. All welcome

Saturday, March 9th at 2 pm: Patron’s Puzzler No. 1 competition (see below) followed by members’ readings.

Saturday, April 13th at 2 pm: Patron’s Puzzler No. 2 competition (see below) followed by members’ readings.

Patron’s Puzzlers

If you wish to participate in the Patron’s Puzzler competitions for members, but can’t attend meetings, send your entry to reach PO Box 234, North Hobart 7002 by the Friday before the meeting and another member will be asked to read it for you. The prizes Wal is offering appeared in the News & Views section of the January – February issue of Tascribe.

Patron’s Puzzler No. 1: Each letter in the name of many large organisations begins a word of a sentence about that organisation – not necessarily complimentary! A few examples:

ALITALIA: Aircraft Landing In Tokyo. All Luggage In Amsterdam.

HARRODS: Have A Rolls Royce On Daddy, Sweetie.

WOOLWORTHS: We Overwork Old Ladies, Wickedly Overcharge, & Rule The High Street.

Have creative fun by writing some of your own.

Patron’s Puzzler No. 2: My late mother was in a Sydney primary school during WW1. Here’s one of the ‘counting-out rhymes they used: Hickerty pickerty high selickerty, pompilly airy jig.

Every man who has no hair ought to wear a wig.

And another:

Ellery bellery rippty rah, rippty roppty rollar.

Every man who wears a shirt ought to wear a collar.

Can you beat the Botany kids of a century ago? Have a go! You can use real words, made up words, or – like the above – a mixture. – Wal Eastman

Meeting Reports

Saturday, February 9th: Annual General Meeting: Motion (Jen Gibson/ Solveig Hamilton) to increase membership fees to $35 (individual), $45 (family or group) and $20 (student) in 2014 passed unanimously.

President’s and Treasurer’s reports and audited balance sheets were presented and accepted. The 2013 committee was elected (see top of page 1) and Carole Loudon was appointed as auditor. Please note that the President’s Report will appear on the web page in due course.

Motion (Teodino Ottavi/ Karen Wilson) that Robyn Mathison should be made a Life Member passed unanimously.

At the Ordinary Meeting there were readings and discussion of members’ work – short poems from Karen Wilson and Solveig Hamilton, a story from Shirley Burke and memoir from Jim Bashfield. Sue Scott showed us a copy of her recently published book The Jillaroo Jam and read poems from it. Teodino Ottavi read us philosophical musings about growing old and we heard another of Greg Blades’ speculations about the state of the cosmos in 100 trillion years. Andrea McMahon asked members to check their bios on the web page and send her updates if necessary.

There was also a suggestion and discussion about the possibility of sending Tascribe to members by email, instead of a print copy by mail. We already know that many of our members prefer to receive the hard-copy print newsletter, but have no idea how many would rather have it arrive as an email attachment. If you would prefer to receive your newsletter by email instead of by post, please inform the Secretary, in writing to PO Box 234, North Hobart TAS 7002.

Saturday, November 17th, 2012: Due to lack of space, this report was omitted from the January/ February issue of Tascribe. Wal Eastman spoke briefly about Patron’s Puzzlers and promised he’d be setting these competitions again in 2013. The rest of the meeting was devoted to members’ readings and discussion of the work. Those who read were Graeme Hetherington, Robyn Mathison, Michael Sullivan, Solveig Hamilton, Tony Mount, Betty McKenzie-Tubb, Jim Bashfield, John Biggs and Jen Gibson. Mike Cooper also brought along a script he has written and asked Solveig Hamilton, Jen Gibson, Yvonne Stadler and John Biggs to read us one scene.

News & Views

Warm welcome to new member Mae Paterson and welcome back to Joan Latham

* 2013 subscriptions were due on January 1st. Members who have not renewed already will find a membership form enclosed with this newsletter. If subscriptions are not received by the end of April you will miss out on the next issue of Tascribe. Please remember to fill in and return the form with your payment.

* Melbourne Poets’ Union member Mariëtta Elliott-Kleerkoper has reviewed Adrienne Eberhard’s poetry collection This Woman [Black Pepper, 2011] in the on-line journal The Rochford Street Review.

* We offer hearty congratulations to Dr Carli Armstrong, who graduated B. MedSci (Hons) First Class and MBBS from the University of Tasmania in 2012. Carli, who was admitted to the Dean’s Honour Roll in the eligible years 2007, 2008 and 2010, was also shortlisted for a Rhodes Scholarship. Some of us remember her as an active junior member of the Fellowship when she was a little girl and then as a successful Ogilvie High School student – and talented flautist. This year Carli will be working as an Intern at Launceston General Hospital. Karen must be so proud of her daughter! We wish Carli well and hope that in this new phase of her life she might find time again for creative writing.

* Older members will be saddened to learn of the death in late January of our former member Rose Manwaring. Rose was actively involved in the Fellowship until about ten years ago and was a contributor to at least ten of our chapbooks of 100-word competition entries.

* At the AGM, Yvonne Stadler stepped down from the committee, but we’re pleased to report that we’ll still be seeing her at meetings. We take this opportunity to thank her for generous, cheerful service to the Fellowship as a committee member from 1994 –1997 and again from 2008 – 2012, inclusive. During the former years Yvonne worked with the State Library to set up our first website. In the latter years Yvonne has hosted committee meetings at her home and also has organised the refreshments at our general meetings. In 1994 she took over from Gwen Harwood the task of editing and producing the popular chapbooks of entries in our members’ 100-word and other mini-competitions. Thank you Yvonne!

* Margaret Blake’s children’s fantasy novel Merlin’s School for Ordinary Children – The Ring of Curses [Sid Harta, 2012] has been described as ‘fast, fun and full on, a rollicking good read, jam-packed with magic and excitement that will have you captivated and hanging our for more’.
