Supported Independence

#9: Complete General Education Core Curriculum –

modified for students with cognitive impairments

Clarification:

Performance Expectations (PE 1-8) for the Supported Independence Curriculum are aligned with the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks. To facilitate students achieving their greatest potential within the General Education Core Curriculum, section #9 was added. Through instruction directed at particular student’s learning style, students with moderate cognitive impairment may achieve greater success in reading for information and pleasure, communicating through handwriting and technology, and becoming more proficient in math skills. Also, the students may become more literate concerning their world as they are taught science and social studies concepts.

This #9 section is aligned with the Michigan Curriculum Framework standards and benchmarks. It includes mathematics, language arts, technology, science, and social studies content. It is recognized that all performance expectations for this population are best learned when applied in real life contexts! The content is listed in this separate section for convenience in finding it in one place. Because this is a large content area, an indexed outline of this section is on the next page.
