GMU students generally use APA style for academic papers. In APA style, writers have to cite their sources in two places:

1) In-text citation—author’s last name and publication year:

Example 1:

According to Smith (2014), climate change is having a negative impact on agriculture around the world.

Example 2:

Climate change is having a negative impact on agriculture around the world (Smith, 2014).

Other information:

• If there are more than two or three authors, you can say (Smith et al, 2014).

• If you cite the same source two times in a row, you can say (ibid) instead of writing the citation again.

• If you use the EXACT WORDS of an author, you must put those words in “quotes” as well as cite with author and date.

2) End-of-essay citation—author’s last name and publication year:

Notice:

• Outdenting of first line—this is to make it easier to scan and read. References are listed by alphabetical order of last name or organization name.

• Italicizing journal or publication name.
