Region V Minority Health Interstate and

Region V Minority Health Interstate and Tribal Data Quality Workgroup

Purpose, Vision, and Mission Statements

Accurate and reliable population specific health status data are vital in showing the true magnitude of health disparities. In addition, the availability of population specific health status data is critical to effective program planning, implementation and influencing policy makers. There are currently several gaps in data used to identify and monitor disparities among racial and ethnic minority populations* in Region V (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin). States and tribes within Region V, as well as U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are attempting to resolve these gaps, by reinventing current data policies and systems. Ultimately, the workgroup’s mission is to use data to improve health status and equity for all racial and ethnic minority populations living in Region V.

Vision

All data sources used to describe health and issues which impact it in Region V will be available, accurate, and reliable for all indigenous, racial and ethnic populations.

Mission

The mission of the Region V Minority Health Interstate and Tribal Data Quality Workgroup is two fold:

1. To identify data gaps and challenges to collecting, analyzing, and reporting accurate and reliable health status data on all racial and ethnic minority populations, and

2. To work together to improve the availability and quality of indigenous, racial and ethnic minority health data.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the Region V Minority Health Interstate and Tribal Data Quality Workgroup is to develop a regional approach to:

• Address gaps in state health data reports with an emphasis on indigenous, racial and ethnic minority populations.

• Exchange information regarding successes and challenges experienced by Tribal Health and state health departments to resolve minority health data collection, analysis and reporting issues.

• Provide updates on federal activities/initiatives/policies that are consistent with the goals of the workgroup, state and Tribal health entities.

• Standardize racial and ethnic minority health data collection procedures.

• Share data sources, experiences and expertise to help resolve some of the collection, reporting and dissemination issues of indigenous, racial and ethnic minority populations.
