|POSITION SUMMARY |

| |

|Under the direction of the Manager, this position is responsible to oversee the daily operation of the UW Health Sports Medicine Fitness Center and related |

|programs. |

| |

|Responsibilities in the daily operation of the center include developing the daily staff schedule (includes weekend schedules, Fitness evaluation schedule, TRP|

|Orientation schedule); evaluating and developing exercise programs for participants who are healthy and at risk; staffing the fitness center floor; and work |

|with all other facility departments to work collaboratively within the Fitness Center and other shared spaces (Fitness Center, Exercise Classrooms, Preventive |

|Cardiology, Exercise Science Lab and Aquatic Center) at the Research Park facility. |

| |

|The Exercise Specialist Supervisor will be responsible for hiring, preparing performance evaluations, and training the Exercise Specialist staff. In addition,|

|the incumbent assists the manager with the annual capital and operating budget for the cost center. |

| |

|The Exercise Specialist Supervisor will work with a diverse clientele and will need to function independently in decision making and problem solving |

|challenging situations. A wide variety of internal and external contact relationships are involved in performance of the duties of this position. The |

|incumbent interacts with employees at all levels (i.e. Directors, Facility managers, Medical staff, Fitness Supervisors, Support staff, Environmental Services,|

|Facilities and Engineering, Marketing and Communication). External relationships necessary to this position include fitness center members, class |

|participants, patients, area businesses, community groups, and area fitness clubs, referring physicians, third party payers and health care providers outside |

|of the UW Health system. |

| |

|This position also participates in the professional education of undergraduate students in exercise physiology and other related fields. This position |

|directly supervises the Sports Medicine Fitness Center Internship. This includes reviewing applications, selecting outstanding applicants, and overseeing |

|their semester in the facility. In addition, research, community outreach and education are essential elements of this position. |

| |

|Problems encountered are of a moderate to high level of difficulty and can usually be solved by referring to the manager. Good communication and |

|interpersonal skills are essential to this position. General supervision and direction will be provided. (General supervision implies that the work is |

|performed independently and incumbent seldom refers matters to the supervisor except for clarification). |

| |

|The Exercise Specialist Supervisor serves as a role model by practicing exemplary behavior when working with patients, visitors, and fellow staff members. |

| |

|A high level of organizational skill is crucial to successful performance, including the ability to independently schedule staff and activities, while taking |

|into account the diverse priorities represented in our user groups. Record keeping, purchasing, advanced planning, the ability to work within a networked |

|computer system and the ability to function within a flexible work schedule to meet changing demands are also responsibilities of this position. |

| |

|MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES |

| |

|A. Supervise Medically Based Fitness Center Staff |

|Recruit, hire and training all Exercise Specialists to staff the Fitness Center. |

|Lead regular trainings to insure staff are knowledgeable in emergency procedures and day-to-day operations. |

|Conduct regular staff performance reviews and set clear behavior expectations. Follow disciplinary procedures, as necessary. |

|Prepare and edit timecards for all direct reports. |

|Lead monthly staff meeting and record minutes. |

| |

|B. Fitness Center Oversight Responsibilities |

|Coordinate daily and weekend schedule for the Fitness Center. Inform the Front Desk of any staff/schedule changes. |

|Coordinate fitness evaluation schedule. |

|Coordinate TRP orientation schedule |

|Instruct interns, students and volunteers in the Fitness center |

|Participate in on-going staff education |

|Coordinate the general upkeep of the Fitness Center area. This includes maintaining maintenance contracts on equipment, service request for repairs, ordering |

|parts, etc. Maintain strong relationship with our vendors – both internal and external. |

|Work with exercise equipment vendors to get quotes on equipment and services as needed (part of Capital and Operating budget processes). |

|Coordinate and collaborate with all departments that utilize the Fitness Center shared spaces. |

|Communicate policies with all facility staff and patrons to keep the facility running smoothly. Provide updates as needed. |

|Be open and a champion to new initiatives throughout the center. |

| |

|C. Fitness Center Responsibilities |

|Risk assessment to determine appropriateness of participation in the fitness center and/or class programs. |

|Conduct initial interviews and evaluate new members in order to develop appropriate exercise prescriptions and/or assist in choosing the appropriate class |

|program for apparently healthy individuals and individuals with special physical, emotional and social needs. |

|Demonstrate knowledge of proper exercise guidelines for low, moderate and high risk populations and modify exercise prescriptions due to changes in |

|conditioning, medical status, medications or environmental conditions. |

|Educate participants in principles of exercise theory, progression of programs, and realistic goal setting. |

|Demonstrate proper use of exercise equipment and exercise modalities. |

|Supervise daily activities of the Fitness Center. Orient new participants to the rules and policies of the center. Greet members and build relationships with|

|regulars on your shifts. Build a welcoming and professional relationship with members (learn medical history, medications, and special needs). |

|Manage new member appointments during scheduled hours. Intent of these appointments includes interpreting fitness assessment data; providing an overview of |

|prescribed exercise programs; answering member/patient questions and providing additional guidance. |

|Document changes in members’ medical status, medication lists, and note any changes made in exercise programs. |

|Assessing member/patient hemodynamic status when needed. |

|Oversee the fitness center floor to ensure the safe and appropriate use of equipment. |

|Assist members with special needs. |

|Assist members with sign up for equipment. |

|Maintain the general upkeep of the equipment, locker rooms and facility. |

|Demonstrate the necessary skills to work in a team environment. |

|Communicate and share relevant information with the fitness center team through the use of e-mail. |

|Communicate with FC and AQ staff, PT staff (Sports and Spine), PC staff, and FD staff regarding member/patient needs. |

|Be prepared to handle emergency situations. |

|Assume other duties as assigned by the Manager |

| |

|D. Supervise the Fitness Center Internship |

|Oversee Fitness Center Internship. |

|Receive and review all applicants. |

|Set up selection process and interviews. |

|Select outstanding applicants. |

|Oversee their experience throughout the center. |

|Work to ensure that all educational policies and procedures between the entity (UW Health) and academic home are followed. |

| |

|E. Professional Development and Continuing Education |

|Complete all required competencies and maintain skill level. |

|Observe, practice, research or study as necessary to acquire and develop skills to work with patients/participants |

| |

|F. Other Responsibilities |

|Assist in educational and incentive programs for the members of the Fitness Center. |

|Assist with special events and programs sponsored by the Sports Medicine Center. |

|Assist with research projects – leading groups as needed. |

|Assist with teaching exercise classes to cover for vacations/sick time of co-workers. |

|Assume other duties assigned by the Cost Center manager |

|POSITION REQUIREMENTS |

|Education |Minimum |Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology or related field. |

| |Preferred |Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology or related field. |

|Work Experience |Minimum |Two (2) years of experience working in a large community/hospital based fitness center. |

| | |Experience with at risk populations (hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, bariatrics, |

| | |orthopedic, and/or neurological issues). |
