I. Introduction

In Spanish, there are several words that can be used to intensify (boost the meaning) or quantify (referring to the number or amount) the meaning of other words. Intensifiers are not the same as comparatives and superlatives.

Comparatives compare one person or thing to another. Intensifiers have a different function. The adjective modified by an intensifier stands alone.

Intensifiers can be used with adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and verbs.

Here are some examples of the Spanish words used.

II. Intensifiers

Below are two of the most common intensifiers.

1. muy - very

La salsa brava es muy picante.

The sauce is very spicy

2. Bastante - quite

El pollo es bastante caro en este mercado. The chicken is quite expensive in this market.

III. Quantifiers

Below are three examples of quantifiers

1. demasiado - too much

No puedo comparar estos zapatos porque son demasiado caros. I cannot buy these/those shoes because they are too expensive.

2. Poco - a little

Habla poco ese chica. This girl says very little.

3. Mucho - a lot

?Lees mucho? Do you read a lot ?
