Students will learn the definition of a marriage, both traditional and common law. Students will be able to take examples of potential marriages and explain why it is or is not a marriage. Methodology and Timing Begin class with a couple videos from the television show “This is Us” to reexamine the topic of interracial adoption that we discussed during our family law opinion poll. (10 minutes)Begin the PowerPoint and ask the students what they believe the word “family” refers to. Is there only one type of family? (5 minutes)Discuss what type of effects being in a family has in a person’s life. Does it create responsibilities we would not normally have in other relationships in our lives? Are these responsibilities a “legal” responsibility? (10 minutes)Disclose some of the many legal consequences of being in a family such as taxes etc… (5 minutes)Discuss the changes in families in America over the past 100-200 years. Why are there less marriages, why are there more divorces? (5 minutes)Hand out gay/interracial marriage handout and have the students complete it. Discuss its meaning afterwards. (15 minutes)Discuss marriage, what are the common beliefs about marriage? Can you only get married in a church, synagogue, or mosque? (10 minutes)Explain how marriages can occur in front of a judge, priest, or anyone with a marriage license (including Elvis) 5 minutes. Ask the students what they think is important to consider before getting married and discuss why those things might be important (10 minutes)End class by summarizing the legal requirements and limits to getting married such as age, relationship to the spouse, and number of spouses.
