First Column: Ranking 1-10 (1 point per ranking) (10 total)

Please rank each moment that you discuss. “1” means it is the most important moment in the book. “10” means it is the least important moment.

These need not be presented in ranked order on your moments sheet. I would prefer the moments be presented in sequence as they appeared in the book and then ranked as the last step in this assignment.

Second Column: Moment Title (including page numbers)

(2 points per moment) (20 points total)

This description does not have to be lengthy. It should, however, completely

include any relative information needed to make sense of the rest of the columns.

Third Column: Two (2) Quotations (including page numbers)

(2 points per moment) (20 total)

These quotes should be complete. Do not use ellipsis unless you are just skipping to the most important part of the quote. Do not use ellipsis to make the quote small enough for the quote to fit on the page. These quotes should be significant. Most of the time, quotes should not be simple dialogue. If your excerpt contains dialogue or narration, make sure to note the identity of the speaker.

Fourth Column: Literary / Rhetorical Device

(2 points per moment) (20 Total)

These devices should be evident in the quotes. Do not discuss a literary or rhetorical device that is not evident in the quote. A brief explanation must accompany the device. Literary devices are not things like characterization, dialogue, narrative, exposition, diction, etc. These are terms like imagery, foreshadowing, simile, metaphor, extended metaphor, paradox, irony, etc.

For example:

The simile "like a wounded thing" expresses the tone of disgust and pity that is present in this scene. Or The imagery of monstrous wings and the leaden air also foreshadows Dorian's coming death.

Fifth Column: Significance / Connection (3 points per moment) (30 Total)

This column should completely combine all of the previous two columns. You

should make connections that are bigger than the text on the page. Look to the bigger picture, such as theme, motifs, etc. Think about universal ideas. Describe how the moment reveals a universal idea, and answer the question So what? by explaining why people should care about this moment.

For example:

This, for me, was the climax, or the turning point of the novel. After Dorian kills Basil, the only person in the book who has ever truly cared for Dorian's wellbeing, he can't ever go back to being a good person again. It is very hard to have any sympathy for Dorian at this moment or in any of the moments after.

or

This moment is significant because it is the first time that the portrait of Dorian noticeably changes. It scares Dorian and he decides that he must immediately begin to lead a more moral life, but he does not. He hides the portrait because it disgusts him and scares him. After this moment, Dorian becomes more and more immoral and the portrait changes more often, and for the worse.

Total Points possible: 100 points

Assignment not accepted late.
