Preparing the Rough Draft for a Persuasive Research Speech

Preparing the Rough Draft for a Persuasive Research Speech

❖ Follow the information set-up on your outline.

❖ Begin with your introduction (5-8 sentences):

o Use a technique to grab your reader’s interest…fact/statistic, strong statement, rhetorical question, brief anecdote

o Begin by giving some background information on your topic…essentially explain why it is controversial.

o Expand into your opinion, without using personal pronouns – you should feel strongly about your topic – be sure to show it!!

o End with your thesis!!

❖ Transition into your main points! (Use the transitions packet you received in the beginning of the semester.)

o Basically, you are breaking down your argument into varying reasons that ultimately support your thesis.

o Each main point should be supported by a variety of details.

▪ Please use SPECIFIC information from your resources/notecards.

▪ If you use a direct quote it should look like this:

• “14% of teenage drivers admit to operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol” (Smith 10).

▪ Introduce your quotes – don’t just drop them in there!!!

▪ If you use a chunk of information as a paraphrase, remember to place an in-text citation following the information.

▪ It should look just like this:

• Teenage drivers cite several reasons for driving under the influence of alcohol yet they know it as dangerous as driving with their eyes closed. They do it because they do not want to get in trouble if their parents have to come pick them up instead. Teens also risk drinking and driving because they believe it will give them popularity status. (Smith 10)

o Remember to use a topic sentence and a closing sentence for each paragraph.

o THIS IS REALLLLLLLLLLLY IMPORTANT:

▪ Make sure that YOU HAVE EVERY SOURCE CITED AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR PAPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

▪ ALL SOURCES ON YOUR FINAL WORKS CITED SHOULD MATCH THE IN-TEXT CITATIONS!!!!

▪ PLEASE GIVE AN IN-TEXT CITATION TO ALL DIRECT QUOTES AND PARAPHRASES.

▪ YOU NEED AT LEAST TWO DIRECT QUOTES THROUGHOUT YOUR PAPER.

• DO NOT CHOOSE DIRECT QUOTES THAT ARE MORE THAN THREE LINES … that is way too much text!!!

❖ Conclusion Paragraph:

o Follow the appropriate essay structure for a conclusion paragraph

▪ Start off with a specific restatement of your thesis

▪ Answer the “So What” Question and validate why your research is important

▪ End with a broad statement or challenge to make your reader think!!!

o Ultimately the goal of your conclusion is to not simply restate your main points but to explain why your research has a purpose!! (Maybe the final conclusion will be a suggestion to ban reality tv or to legalize same sex marriages in all states…)

***A Few General Reminders:

1. NEVER USE PERSONAL PRONOUNS…NEVER! Just don’t do it!!!

2. Check for spelling errors, run-on sentences and fragments.

3. Be wary of word choices … no one wants to hear a speech full of words like “cool, good, bad, nice, things” etc.

4. Keep your tense the same – you are writing from a research standpoint, so keep it in the present.

5. Double space your paper (In MS WORD – Format, Paragraph, Line Spacing, Double)

6. Use a catchy title!!

7. 12 point font, Times New Roman or something comparable

8. 1” margins all around (or default)

9. 2 – 3 pages in total

10. Use correct heading – use the next page as an example.
