EXT- MATILDA’S STREET- AFTERNOON
It’s the beginning of summer, about three days after school has ended. HAZEL RAMSEY, 14-16, is walking down the street to see her best friend, MATILDA STOCKWELL, 14-17. She sees police cars outside of her house, and gets worried. Matilda comes out of her house being escorted by two police men. Hazel walks over to Matilda and the police to see what’s going on.
HAZEL
Matilda? What’s going on?
Matilda continues to look down.
HAZEL
Matilda?
MATILDA
I’m so sorry. I never wanted you
To know.
HAZEL
Know what??
COP #1
Miss, your friend is being taken to
A rehabilitation center for cocaine
Addiction.
Hazel is shocked by this. The cops push Matilda into the car.
MATILDA
I’m so sorry, Hazel.
She can’t speak. She just looks at Matilda, and runs off to her house.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S HOUSE
Hazel runs in and slams the door. She has been trying to fight back tears. Her mom, HEATHER RAMSEY, 35-40, is in the dining room with 5 other members of the Village Restoration Group discussing what to do with the fundraiser money.
HEATHER
Hi, honey. How was Matilda’s?
She ignores her mom, and runs straight to her room. She slams the door behind her. They all look upstairs.
BOARD MEMBER
What was that all about?
HEATHER
I have no idea.
They go back to their meeting like nothing has happened.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S ROOM- EVENING TIME
Hazel is in her room sitting on her bed. She’s looking at a picture of her and Matilda earlier that year. Her dad, RICAHRD RAMSEY, 40-50 knocks on the door, and she stuffs the picture under her pillow.
RICHARD
Hey, princess. Can we come in?
HAZEL
Of course.
HEATHER
We heard about what happened to
Matilda and we’re so sorry.
HAZEL
It’s all right.
Heather comes and sits beside her on the bed.
HEATHER
Well, your father and I have been
Talking about it, and we feel that
It’s best if you spend part of the
Summer with Aunt Sally in Johnson
Shore.
HAZEL
What? Why, you don’t want to see me
Moping around the house?
HEATHER
Of course not. We just don’t think
It’s healthy for you to be where
You can be reminded of…
RICHARD
Plus you haven’t seen your aunt
Since Christmas two years ago! She’s
Dying to see you.
HAZEL
How do you know?
RICHARD
We called her today and made all
The arrangements.
HAZEL
Oh.
HEATHER
Just please try to have a good
Time when you’re there. For us.
She thinks about it.
HAZEL
I will.
Her parents smile, and kiss her.
RICHARD
You better start packing. You leave
The day after tomorrow.
They smile, and leave her room. Hazel flops down on her bed.
HAZEL
It’s better than being here.
CUT TO:
EXT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE- 2 DAYS LATER
Hazel is getting her bag out of the car. Her parents are saying good bye to her.
HEATHER
Now you give us a call if need
Something or just want to talk.
RICHARD
And be careful. There’s no such thing
As too careful these days.
HAZEL
I know.
She hugs them both, and gets out of the car. She walks up to the house and rings the door bell. Her AUNT SALLY, 35-45, answers the door, and hugs her.
AUNT SALLY
Oh my God, look at you! You’ve grown
Up to be such a beautiful young lady!
HAZEL
Hi, Aunt Sally.
She walks inside. The house is a very beautiful house. There is a maid dusting a vase on a table by the stairs. Hazel tries to take in everything. Aunt Sally talks to her while she walks her through the house.
AUNT SALLY
Your mother told me what happened
On the phone. I’m so sorry honey.
HAZEL
It’s all right.
AUNT SALLY
Are you feeling okay?
HAZEL
I guess.
AUNT SALLY
Well, dinner will be in 45 minutes.
I’ll show you to your room.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S ROOM
They open the door to her room. It is very big, and it has its own balcony. Aunt Sally opens the door to the balcony to let in some fresh air.
AUNT SALLY
Here we are. I hope you like it.
HAZEL
Yeah, it’s really nice.
She walks over to Hazel and takes her hands.
AUNT SALLY
Hazel, I promise by the end of the
Summer, you will get through this. We
Are going to spend so much time together,
You’ll forget who Matilda even is.
Hazel is hurt by that comment, but she doesn’t show it. She just laughs along with her aunt.
AUNT SALLY
Are you going to be okay?
HAZEL
Yes, I will.
AUNT SALLY
All right.
She kisses her on the cheek.
AUNT SALLY
I’m so glad you’re here with me.
I really am.
She smiles, and leaves the room. Hazel goes out to the balcony and looks out on to the beach. It’s a beautiful view of the beach, but it still doesn’t make her feel any better. She finally lets the tears come, and breaks down. She wipes away her tears, and watches the setting sun.
CUT TO:
INT- DINING ROOM- EVENING
Aunt Sally and Hazel are eating dinner. One of the maids is serving them dinner. Franny is trying to smile and enjoy dinner, but she’s hurting inside. She goes through dinner talking to Aunt Sally about things she doesn’t care about.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S ROOM- NIGHT TIME
Hazel is lying awake in her bed. She is looking out at the moon. Her Aunt opens the door.
AUNT SALLY
Good night, Hazel. If you
Need anything, just let one of
The maids know.
HAZEL
Thanks. Good night.
She closes the door quietly, and Hazel closes her eyes.
CUT TO:
INT- HALLWAY- MORNING
Hazel is grabbing her book from the kitchen table, and stuffing it in her bag. She gets her sun hat, and walks out the door.
AUNT SALLY
Where are you going?
HAZEL
I’m just going to walk around town
For a little while.
AUNT SALLY
Just-
HAZEL
Be careful, I know. Bye.
She walks out and closes the door be hind her.
CUT TO:
EXT- MAIN BEACH- MORNING
Hazel tries to find a place on the beach to sit and read. She’s carefully avoiding other beach goers, but accidentally trips over a very large man’s leg. She apologizes, and finds a spot to sit and reads her book. After reading for a couple of minutes, she looks up and sees RILEY GRAY, 14-16, and MIKA WINTON, 14-16, surfing. She puts down her book and continues to watch. While surfing, they accidentally bump into someone, who goes crazy.
ANGRY BEACH GOER
Hey, watch where you’re going! Have
Some respect for the other people
Here!!
They say sorry, turn around and laugh. They walk by Hazel without noticing her. She goes back to reading her book.
CUT TO:
Hazel is walking down the boardwalk, looking around town. She takes in all the sights and sounds of Johnson Shore. There are surfers, tourists, punk-rockers all mixing together. Hazel stops by one shop and looks at the beautiful glass wind-chimes. Three guys, including DEAN, 16-20, spot her, and start to follow her. Dean comes up to her and starts to hit on her.
DEAN
Excuse me, do you have any over due
Library books?
HAZEL
Um, I don’t think so.
DEAN
Oh I know you do, because you got
‘Fine’ written all over you.
Hazel just laughs it off, and walks on. She tries to brush it off, but they are still following her and calling her over. She’s starting to get nervous, when Riley and Mika spot her, and come to her defense.
MIKA
Wow, I didn’t know the circus was
In town. It looks like the freak
Show escaped.
DEAN
Hey, we were just having a little
Fun. Isn’t that right, sweetie.
Riley comes over to help defend Hazel.
RILEY
Hey, Dean. How’s Cynthia?
They all stop laughing.
RILEY
I’m sure she’d love to hear about
This.
DEAN
Bite me. Come on guys, let’s get
Out of here.
They walk away, and Riley and Mika give them the finger when he’s not looking.
HAZEL
Thanks.
RILEY
Don’t sweat it. You’re not from
Around here, are you?
HAZEL
Is it obvious?
MIKA
Just a little bit. But don’t
Worry. Just stick with us, and
You’ll be fine.
She sticks out her hand for shaking.
MIKA
I’m Mika Winton.
RILEY
Riley Gray.
HAZEL
I’m Hazel Ramsey. It’s nice to
Meet you.
They shake hands, and smile.
RILEY
Oh, and don’t mind Dean. He’s used
That line on every girl he’s met.
MIKA
It’s sad, but true.
HAZEL
Well, it was creative. And he
Tried.
MIKA
Wow, rich and a sense of humor.
HAZEL
How do you know, I mean, what
Makes you think I’m rich?
RILEY
Exhibit A, your name. You can’t
Get more aristocratic than Hazel
Ramsey.
MIKA
Plus we recognized your last name.
It’s Hazel Ramsey, as in Sally
Ramsey, one of the richest people
In this whole town.
HAZEL
Oh.
RILEY
But don’t worry about it. It’s not
Like you rub it in people’s faces
Like Cynthia does.
HAZEL
Who’s she?
MIKA
Oh, God. Where do I begin to describe
The spinning black hole that we call
Cynthia?
RILEY
Let’s not go there. Anyway, there’s
This party tonight down by the old
Barn. You want to come with?
HAZEL
Really?
Riley and Mika nod their heads. Hazel smiles shyly.
HAZEL
Sure, I’d love to go.
RILEY
Great. Meet us by the arcade at
Seven thirty tonight.
HAZEL
Okay.
Hazel’s cell-phone rings and she checks who it is. It’s her Aunt Sally.
HAZEL
Oh no. I’m sorry, I have to go.
I’ll see you guys at seven thirty.
She runs back home, and they wave to her.
MIKA
Bye.
RILEY
See ya. So what do you think?
MIKA
A little shy, but she’s cool.
RILEY
Yeah, unusual for your typical
Rich girl.
CUT TO:
INT-DINING ROOM-EVENING TIME
Hazel and Aunt Sally are eating dinner. Hazel is eating quickly so she can go to the party. She’s talking while shoveling food down her mouth.
AUNT SALLY
So how was your day?
HAZEL
Good.
AUNT SALLY
Do you like the town?
HAZEL
Yeah.
AUNT SALLY
What about the beach?
HAZEL
It was nice.
She finishes the last of her dinner, takes a gulp of water and leaves the table.
AUNT SALLY
Where are you going?
HAZEL
I’m going to a party I was invited
To.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S ROOM
Hazel grabs a shirt and changes. She puts on some bracelets, grabs her bag, and heads downstairs.
AUNT SALLY
Do you have your cell phone?
HAZEL
Yeah.
AUNT SALLY
Remember to call me.
HAZEL
I will. Bye.
She rushes out the front door. Aunt Sally stands there for a moment, shrugs, and walks away.
CUT TO:
INT- BARN PARTY- NIGHT TIME
Hazel, Riley and Mika walk into the barn party. It’s a pretty big party, with lots of beer and loud music. They walk in and make their way through the crowd.
HAZEL
Are all your parties like this?
MIKA
Pretty much. You find an empty
Place big enough to hold at least
100 people. Bring some beer, get
some music and let it rip.
RILEY
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
They find an empty couch to sit on.
RILEY
So what brings you to our neck of
The woods?
HAZEL
My parents wanted me to come spend
Some time with my Aunt, so I’ll be
Here for the next couple of weeks.
MIKA
Your parents don’t mind you being
Gone for so long?
HAZEL
Well, not really. In fact, I think
They’d rather have me here than
Moping around at home.
MIKA
My parents are in Bosnia for the
Summer. Some new tree was discovered
Last week, so they’ve gone to get
Some samples and bring it back here
For testing.
HAZEL
Wow, Bosnia.
MIKA
It’s not bad, though. I mostly spend
Time with Riley and her sister, Audrey.
RILEY
And don’t forget Marcus.
MIKA
Ah, how could I forget Marcus?
HAZEL
What about your parents?
RILEY
They’re in Indiana with my Grandma.
They didn’t want me and Audrey to
Travel so far so they let us stay
Home.
MIKA
Hey, I’m going to get some drinks.
Do you want anything, Hazel?
HAZEL
Sure.
Riley and Mika go to get drinks. When CYNTHIA VELAZQUEZ, 14-17, looks over and sees Hazel, Dean points to her, and she walks over to where Hazel is.
CYNTHIA
Excuse me, were you that guy over there
Earlier this afternoon?
She points to where Dean is.
HAZEL
Yes.
CYNTHIA
So you’re the slut that was hitting
On my cousin.
HAZEL
What?
CYNTHIA
Wow, this is really something. Who
Do you think you are, following him
Around and flirting with him?! You
Must be so desperate to do what you did!
At that moment, Cynthia gets beer spilt all over her. She screams, and Riley and Mika push by her. They drop the empty cups on the ground. Dean rushes to Cynthia’s defense.
DEAN
Hey, do you guys have anything to
Say?
RILEY & MIKA
Oops.
They turn back to Hazel, and Cynthia starts to walk away.
CYNTHIA
You guys are lucky I was in a
Forgiving mood. Next time, you’re
In for it, bitch.
Cynthia and Dean walk away.
RILEY
She actually was pretty forgiving
This time around.
HAZEL
What’s unforgiving?
MIKA
Pray that you don’t ever find out.
HAZEL
Thanks for inviting me to the party.
It was really nice of you.
Hazel turns around, and walks out of the party. Riley and Mika run after her.
CUT TO:
EXT-STREET- NIGHT TIME
Hazel is walking down the empty road. Riley and Mika are a couple feet behind her trying to stop her.
MIKA
Hazel, wait!
HAZEL
I should be getting home now. It’s
Starting to get late.
RILEY
Come on, she’s just a stupid bitch.
And she’s a coward.
MIKA
Exactly. Like the way she had to have
Dean come and protect her. It was
Pathetic.
HAZEL
No, I was.
They grab her shoulders to stop her.
RILEY
Come back to the party. We’ll just
Avoid her the rest of the night.
MIKA
The only way you can show her you’re
Not afraid of her, is if you go back.
HAZEL
But I am afraid of her.
She thinks about it for a minute.
HAZEL
All right. I’ll come back.
They walk back to the party.
When they’re back inside the barn, DAN RAYMOND, 16-19, makes his way through the crowd to Hazel.
DAN
Hey, sorry about that. Cynthia
Has a little bit of a short temper.
HAZEL
It’s all right. I’m just glad I’m not
The one who got beer spilled on her.
DAN
I’m Dan.
HAZEL
I’m Hazel. It’s nice to meet you.
DAN
Nice to meet you too.
They share a moment. Hazel bites her lip, and one of Dan’s friend’s calls him over.
DAN
Oh, I have to go. I’ll see you
Around.
Dan smiles, and makes his way through the crowd to his buddies. Riley and Mika look at love struck Hazel and whisper to each other.
MIKA
Do you think we should tell her?
RILEY
Maybe later.
CUT TO:
INT- HALLWAY- NIGHT TIME
Hazel comes home late from the party. Aunt Sally comes out of her room in her robe.
AUNT SALLY
Hi, where have you been?
HAZEL
I was at the party, like I told
You.
AUNT SALLY
You forgot to call me.
HAZEL
I did? Oh yeah, I did. I’m sorry,
Aunt Sally.
AUNT SALLY
It’s all right. But next time it
Happens…
HAZEL
I know. Good night.
She walks upstairs to her room. Aunt Sally sighs and goes back to her room.
CUT TO:
EXT- BOARDWALK- MORNING
Hazel is walking down the boardwalk, and is tapped on the shoulder. She turns around, and sees that it’s Riley and Mika.
HAZEL
Hey!
MIKA
Hey, we were walking down to see
Audrey and Marcus. Why don’t you
Come with us.
HAZEL
Sure.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN SURF AND KAYAK LESSONS
They walk down to Hang Ten Surf and Kayak Lessons, where AUDREY GRAY, 18-22, and MARCUS JOHNSON, 18-22, both work. There is a big blue and yellow sign with “Hang Ten Surf and Kayak Lessons” in big white letters. The sign is right above the door.
HAZEL
What is this place?
RILEY
It’s what my parents do for a living.
My sister’s working the front desk
While they’re in Indiana.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN SURF AND KAYAK LESSONS
They walk inside, where Audrey is at the front desk on the computer. She’s reading an article on the effects of global warming on the environment. Marcus is in the back putting back wet suits that were used in the previous lesson. The room is filled with funky trinkets and old equipment.
AUDREY
Morning guys.
MIKA
Morning, Audrey.
RILEY
Morning, Dee.
Mika brings Hazel up to the front desk.
MIKA
Dee, this is Hazel. She’s in
Town for the summer.
AUDREY
Hi, Hazel, I’m Audrey. It’s
Great to know you.
HAZEL
It’s nice to meet you too.
RILEY
We’re just going to grab the
Keys to the house.
AUDREY
Fine by me.
They walk to the back to grab the keys. Audrey continues to read the article on global warming.
AURDEY
God, the government thinks they
Can just destroy our earth so we
Can pollute the air with toxins
That can kill people! That’s total
Bullsh-
Just at that moment, a family with two kids walks in the door. Audrey stops herself, and completely switches modes.
AUDREY
Hi! Welcome to Hang Ten Surf and
Kayak lessons. How can I help you?
CUT TO:
Hazel, Riley and Mika are walking to the back of the building, where he’s hanging up damp wet-suits to dry. He has the radio playing music.
RILEY
Hey, Marcus.
MARCUS
Hey guys.
RILEY
This is Hazel. She’s new to town.
MARCUS
Welcome to Johnson Shore, the happiest
Place on earth.
RILEY
If only. We’ll see you later tonight.
MARCUS
Bye, guys.
They grab the keys, and leave the store. They say good bye to Audrey, who is handing paperwork to the parents.
CUT TO:
EXT- RILEY’S HOUSE
They’re walking down the street to Riley’s house. The street is made up of small beach houses right next to each other. They stop at the last house on the street.
RILEY
Here we are. Be it ever so humble.
She unlocks the door, but it won’t budge. She rams herself against the door, and it finally pushes open. They step inside, and walk to the kitchen. They get some coke out of the fridge, and go upstairs to Riley’s room. She has an old stereo next to her bed. Her surfboard is next to the window in her room. They sit down and lean against the bed.
MIKA
So we saw you talking to Dan last
Night.
Hazel starts to blush, and she bites her lip.
HAZEL
You did?
RILEY
Yes, and you were all over him!
HAZEL
Oh God, I was?
Riley and Mika start to laugh. Hazel is now bright red.
HAZEL
Is he dating anyone?
RILEY
I don’t think he-
Mika jabs her in the ribs. She gives her a look.
RILEY
Yeah, he’s got a girlfriend.
HAZEL
Who is it?
They’re quiet. They’re deciding whether to tell her or not.
RILEY
Do we really have to tell her?
I mean, it’s okay if-
MIKA
Yes, we have to tell her!
RILEY
Shit. He’s going out with the
Scourge of the earth.
MIKA
And her name starts with a “C”.
She holds out her hand in the shape of a C.
HAZEL
Are you serious?
She leans against the bed.
RILEY
Sorry, but we had to tell you.
HAZEL
It’s all right. Better now than
Never.
Riley takes a big gulp from her coke.
RILEY
Changing the subject. There’s a
Windsurfing race down at the beach.
Want to come?
HAZEL
When is it?
MIKA
Five o clock tonight. Meet us by
Hang Ten at quarter to five.
HAZEL
Sure.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN- EVENING TIME
Hazel is walking down to the shop. Riley, Mika, Audrey and Marcus locking the door to Hang Ten. They turn and wave to her. They all pile into Marcus’ old Chevy truck and drive over to the beach.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH- EVENING TIME
They get out of the car, and walk over to the beach. There is a crowd of people already. Two guys are by the edge of the water with their windsurfing boards ready. There are 2 buckets on a table with money in them for bets. The one on the left says “Chris”, and the one on the right says “Jake”. The MC is getting everybody to quiet down.
MC
All right guys, you know the rules.
First one to there wins.
The MC points to a spot halfway down the beach. The racers get in their ready positions. Dan spots Hazel and walks over to her.
DAN
Hey! What are you doing here?
HAZEL
Oh, I’m here with Riley and Mika.
We’re watching the race.
DAN
Sweet. So how long are you here for?
HAZEL
I’m here until-
CYNTHIA
Dan!
Cynthia comes to Dan’s side, and hooks her arm around his. Hazel looks down so her eyes don’t meet Cynthia’s. Dan tries to make the situation better.
DAN
Oh, Cynthia, this is Hazel. Hazel,
This is my girlfriend, Cynthia.
CYNTHIA
Hi. Come on, honey. The race is
about to start.
DAN
See you later, Hazel.
HAZEL
Bye.
Cynthia gives Hazel a menacing look while Dan isn’t looking. Hazel stands there until Mika finds her and pulls her over to where they’re all standing. The MC walks over to the two racers, and holds up her arms.
MC
On your mark. Get set. GO!!
She throws her hands down, and the race begins. The two racers fly in the air as they speed towards the finish line. The crowd follows the race to the mid point of the beach. Hazel is immediately gripped by the race and the sport itself. Jake flies by Chris and wins the race. The crowd cheers, and Jake is announced the winner.
MC
The winner for tonight’s race is
Jake! Congratulations. Anybody who
Wants to race next time, see me.
The crowd starts to get smaller as people leave. There are people congratulating Jake on his win. Chris walks over to Jake and shakes his hand to show that there are no hard feelings. Some of Chris’ friends join him, and they walk off. The MC takes the bucket labeled “Chris”, and collects the money for herself. Riley, Mika, Audrey and Marcus congratulate the racers, and they head back for the car.
CUT TO:
Hazel’s mind is still flashing back to Jake flying into the air. Audrey and Marcus are talking to each other by the car. Riley and Mika are talking when Hazel suddenly brings up the next race.
HAZEL
Do you think I could do that?
Riley and Mika stop and look at Hazel.
RILEY
Do what?
HAZEL
Do you think I could race?
MIKA
Well, do you know how to windsurf?
HAZEL
No. But I’m sure I could learn how.
MIKA
I’d give it a second thought if I
Were you.
RILEY
She’s right. If you fall, it’s a
Long way to go.
HAZEL
I know, but I don’t care.
They turn around, a little surprised at her.
RILEY
You really want to do this?
HAZEL
Yes.
Riley sighs and looks at Mika.
MIKA
I think we could do it.
RILEY
So do I.
Hazel smiles, and hugs them.
HAZEL
Thank you guys!
She sees that Riley and Mika aren’t into touchy feely stuff, and backs away embarrassed.
HAZEL
Sorry.
RILEY
It’s all right. We’ll ask Marcus
About it too. He’s good with this
Kind of thing.
Marcus calls for them from the car.
MARCUS
Hey you guys! Hurry up!
AUDREY
Yeah, come on slowpokes!
MIKA
Coming!
They run over to Audrey and Marcus, and get in the car.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN- MORNING
Audrey is hanging up a poster for environmental awareness when Hazel walks in.
HAZEL
Morning, Audrey.
AUDREY
Good morning, Hazel.
Riley and Mika come out from the back. They say hi to her, and bring her to Marcus.
RILEY
Hey Marcus, we need your help.
MARCUS
Sure, what’s up?
MIKA
Hazel wants to compete in the next
Race. We need your consulting.
Marcus examines Hazel. He lifts up her arm to see if she has any muscle.
RILEY
Well, is it hopeless?
MARCUS
She’s got a lot of work to do,
But I think she can do it if
She trains hard enough.
Hazel smiles at that remark.
MIKA
And we were wondering if you could
Help us train her.
MARCUS
And why is that?
MIKA
Because we know how much you love
Us and would do anything to help us.
Riley and Mika make pleading faces.
MARCUS
The puppy dog face doesn’t work on
Me and you know that. But I’ll still
Help you, because I love you that
Much.
MIKA
Thank you, Marcus.
CUT TO:
Hazel, Riley, Mika and Marcus are getting some of the windsurfing boards out of the back.
RILEY
Hey, Dee. Can we borrow some of the
Windsurfing boards?
AUDREY
Sure, go ahead. But if you don’t bring
It back in one piece, you’re dead.
RILEY
Many thanks.
She gives her sister a hug and thy squeeze each other’s hand.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN- DAY TIME
They’re loading the boards into the back of Marcus’ truck. They pile in and head to the local beach.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH
Marcus parks the car, and they all get out and grab their boards. Hazel struggles to lift hers up, and Marcus goes to help her. They get to the beach where Cynthia is sun bathing next to Dan. She looks up and sees Hazel with Riley, Mika and Marcus. They get their boards and paddle out to the water. They help Hazel get up on the board, and start to teach her.
MIKA
So just always hold on to the sail.
And when you want to go right or left,
Turn it to the side.
Hazel tries to turn the sail.
RILEY
Okay, Marcus and I are going to surf
Back to shore. Mika’s going to stick
With you and help you out.
HAZEL
Okay.
Riley and Marcus make their way to the shore. Hazel starts to surf to the shore. Mika is following behind her. Hazel steadily makes her way to the shore, when she suddenly crashes. Cynthia sees this, and a devilish grin spreads across her face. Riley and Marcus look over to Hazel to see if she’s okay. Mika surfs over to her.
MIKA
Hey, are you all right?
Hazel tries to get up on the board, but doesn’t succeed.
HAZEL
Yeah, I’m fine.
MIKA
Just take it easy when you’re surfing
Over to the shore.
HAZEL
Okay.
Mika stays by Hazel’s side as she slowly makes her way to the shore. Riley and Marcus look over to her.
RILEY
Are you okay?
HAZEL
Yeah, I’m fine. Don’t worry.
Cynthia walks over to Hazel. She puts her hand on her shoulder and whispers in her ear.
CYNTHIA
Nice job, surfer girl. Next time
You fall on your ass, try not to
Make it look so easy.
She winks, and walks back to where she was before.
MARCUS
Everyone falls on their first try.
Don’t worry about it.
RILEY
Do you want to go out again?
Hazel looks over to Cynthia, who is very pleased with herself.
HAZEL
Sure, I’ll go out again.
The smile on Cynthia’s face goes away when she sees Hazel going out again with the others. When they are out on the water, they go a little slower than last time. When Cynthia is halfway to the shore, she jumps up into the air, and lands safely in the water. Hazel smiles, and Riley, Mika and Marcus are surprised at her. They get back to shore, and lay their boards down on a spot on the beach.
MARCUS
Hey, that wasn’t bad.
RILEY
Yeah, not bad at all.
Dan walks over to Hazel.
DAN
Hey, not to bad for your first
Time.
HAZEL
Thanks.
DAN
Are you entering the competition?
HAZEL
Maybe. I’m not sure.
DAN
If you keep it up, you should.
HAZEL
Thanks.
She smiles at Dan, who walks back over to Cynthia. She saw the whole thing, and is not happy with it. Mika nudges Hazel in the shoulder and laughs.
RILEY
Hey, let’s go out and do a couple
More runs.
MARCUS
Just be ready to go in about half
An hour. I’ve got a lesson at one
Thirty.
They grab their boards and swim out to the ocean.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN- LATER ON
Hazel, Riley, Mika and Marcus get back from the beach. There is water boiling on a portable stove. Audrey is taping a piece of paper onto a used plastic can, and places it on the front desk. The label says “Donations for the ASPA”, and has a picture of a sad looking dog next to it.
AUDREY
Hey, guys. How did it go?
RILEY
It went pretty good. Hazel has a
Knack for this.
AUDREY
Awesome. Do you guys want some tea?
Mika looks at the jar that Audrey put on the front desk.
MIKA
Sure. Hey Audrey, that’s a pretty
Sad looking dog you have there.
AUDREY
Well, there just happens to be thousands
Of other dogs and cats and hamsters who
Are like that, for your information. And
I’m sure lots of people would want to
Help them.
RILEY
Hey, if you want to save them, more
Power to you.
AUDREY
Thanks.
The tea finishes boiling, and Audrey pours everyone a cup of tea. They each grab a Styrofoam cup.
CUT TO:
INT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE- EVENING
Hazel is sitting on the couch reading a book. Her Aunt Sally comes in from work. She puts her bag down, and lets her hair down while she’s talking.
AUNT SALLY
Hi Hazel, how was your day?
HAZEL
It was fine. How was yours?
AUNT SALLY
It was busy.
She takes her shoes off as she is talking.
AUNT SALLY (cont’d)
We had to defend this woman who was
Suing this doctor for malpractice.
She looks at Hazel’s face, which is pink from the sun.
AUNT SALLY
What happened to your face?
Hazel looks up from her book.
HAZEL
What?
AUNT SALLY
Your face. It’s very pink.
HAZEL
Oh, I was just out on the beach.
It was so much fun, Aunt Sally!
I was learning how to windsurf today.
Riley and Mika taught me how to do it,
And at first I-
ANUT SALLY
Wait, you were what?
HAZEL
Windsurfing. It was really hard at
First, but then-
AUNT SALLY
Why would you want to windsurf?
HAZEL
It’s a lot of fun when you get the
Hang of it.
Aunt Sally turns around and shakes her head in disapproval.
HAZEL
What.
AUNT SALLY
Hazel, darling. I don’t think it’s
Proper for you to be windsurfing.
It’s only slackers who do that kind of
Thing.
Hazel is shocked at this comment. She tries to hide it.
AUNT SALLY (cont’d)
Who taught you how to do this, anyway?
HAZEL
My new friends, Mika and Riley. They
Took me to one of the races a few
Nights ago.
Aunt Sally sighs.
HAZEL (cont’d)
They raced to the edge of the-
AUNT SALLY
They took you to one of those?
HAZEL
Well, yeah.
AUNT SALLY
I don’t want you hanging out with
Those girls anymore.
HAZEL
What? But Aunt Sally-
AUNT SALLY
Those girls are a bad influence on
You. Do you understand?
Hazel looks down at her book.
HAZEL
Yes, Aunt Sally.
AUNT SALLY
Good. And tomorrow night we’re going
To dinner with some friends of mine.
I’d love for you to be there also.
HAZEL
Sure, I’ll go.
Aunt Sally walks into the kitchen. Hazel tries to read her book, but she can’t concentrate.
CUT TO:
EXT- BOARDWALK- AFTERNOON
Hazel is walking along the boardwalk, when she runs into Riley and Mika.
MIKA
Hi Hazel.
RILEY
Hey, we’ve been looking for you.
HAZEL
Oh, um, hi guys.
They see she’s acting a little off with them.
MIKA
Are you okay?
HAZEL
What? Yeah, I’m fine.
RILEY
Nice try. Come on, fess up.
What’s going on?
Hazel bites her lip and looks at her feet.
HAZEL
Nothing, my aunt and I got in a fight.
RILEY
Really?
HAZEL
Well, it was more of her just yelling
And me nodding my head saying ‘Yes
Aunt Sally’.
MIKA
What was it about?
Hazel is quiet for a moment.
HAZEL
She doesn’t want me windsurfing,
Or hanging out with you guys.
RILEY
Why not?
HAZEL
Well, she thinks you guys are a
‘Bad influence’.
Riley and Mika try to control laughter.
MIKA
Aww, she thinks we’re bad influences?
That really makes me feel so special.
RILEY
I’m getting that warm and fuzzy feeling
Inside.
HAZEL
You guys aren’t mad?
RILEY
Why would we be mad at you?
MIKA
Yeah, it’s not your fault your Aunt
Doesn’t like us.
HAZEL
Well, she doesn’t want me to enter
The race either.
MIKA
Why not?
HAZEL
She thinks only slackers who do that
Sort of thing.
Riley and Mika try to hold in their anger.
MIKA
Okay, that makes us mad.
RILEY
I’d like to see her try to windsurf!
HAZEL
I’m really sorry, guys. I wish I could
Do it.
RILEY
Well, why can’t you?
HAZEL
Because my Aunt says that I can’t.
MIKA
So why should that stop you?
HAZEL
What?
RILEY
Hazel, just because someone thinks you
Shouldn’t do it, doesn’t mean you have
To stop because they said so.
MIKA
Yeah. Try standing up for yourself once.
It feels great.
HAZEL
Well… I guess I just won’t tell her
Where I’m going.
Riley and Mika smile. Mika puts her arm around Hazel’s shoulder.
MIKA
See, it feels awesome.
Hazel smiles. It does feel awesome. Riley puts her arm over her.
RILEY
Hey, there’s another race tonight.
It’s swimming this time. You wanna
Come with?
HAZEL
Sorry, I can’t. My lovely Aunt wants
Me to come to dinner with her and some
Friends of hers.
MIKA
Where are you guys going?
HAZEL
Some place called the shoreline.
RILEY
Seriously?
HAZEL
Yeah.
MIKA
Dude, that’s like, the fanciest restaurant
In town.
RILEY
Yeah, dress code, five courses, the
Whole nine yards.
HAZEL
Wow, I never knew that.
MIKA
But you go and have a good time.
HAZEL
I’ll try.
They laugh, and continue to walk down the boardwalk.
CUT TO:
INT- THE SHORELINE- NIGHT TIME
Hazel and Aunt Sally are sitting at a table for five. They are waiting for Aunt Sally’s friends.
AUNT SALLY
Now where could they be?
HAZEL
Are they usually late?
AUNT SALLY
Well, they are usually five or ten
Minutes late.
Aunt Sally looks up and sees her friends coming.
AUNT SALLY
Ah, here they come.
Hazel looks up in horror to see Cynthia and her parents walk into the restaurant. JOSEPH VELAZQUEZ, 40-50, and ANITA VELAZQUEZ, 35-45, look over and see Aunt Sally. They walk over, and greet each other.
AUNT SALLY
Joseph! Anita! It’s so good to
See you.
JOSEPH
It’s a pleasure always, Sally.
Cynthia looks at Hazel in disgust.
ANITA
And who is this lovely young lady?
Aunt Sally puts her hands on Hazel’s shoulders.
AUNT SALLY
This is my brother’s daughter, Hazel.
Hazel, this is Cynthia Velazquez.
CYNTHIA
We’ve met before. But it’s nice
To see you again.
Cynthia sticks out her hand. She gives Hazel a very forceful look.
HAZEL
It’s nice to see you too.
They shake hands, and Cynthia smiles.
CUT TO:
Everyone is sitting down. They have already ordered their drinks. The adults are talking and having a bottle of wine that is sitting in a cooler. The waiter is taking their orders. Cynthia is the last to order.
WAITER
And for you, miss?
CYNTHIA
I’ll have the steak. And make it
Very rare, please.
WAITER
Of course, maam.
He takes their menus from everybody.
AUNT SALLY
Wow, very rare?
Cynthia looks right at Hazel.
CYNTHIA
I like my meat very fresh.
ANITA
So tell me Hazel. How do you like
It here so far?
HAZEL
It’s very nice. The beach is really
Great.
JOSEPH
How long have you been here?
HAZEL
About a week. I’ll be staying until
The last week in July.
JOSEPH
Wow, that’s quite a long time.
AUNT SALLY
Well, she’s a bit traumatized. You see,
Her best friend just went into rehab
For drug addiction.
Joseph and Anita are a bit surprised by this. Cynthia tries not to snicker.
AUNT SALLY (cont’d)
No one saw it coming. Not even the
Girl’s, what was her name?
HAZEL
Matilda.
AUNT SALLY
Yes, that’s it. Not even Matilda’s
Parents suspected a thing. It was
Probably the best decision to send
Her here.
Joseph puts his glass of wine down.
CYNTHIA
I’m really sorry about your friend,
Hazel. That’s an awful thing to happen
To anyone.
She reaches across the table for Hazel’s hand.
CYNTHIA (cont’d)
If you need anything or just want to
Talk to someone, just let me know.
AUNT SALLY
Aw, that’s very sweet of you, Cynthia.
Joseph and Anita smile.
JOSEPH
Well, that’s our Cynthia.
CYNTHIA
Daddy, stop it. You’re embarrassing me.
Anita smiles, and Joseph kisses his daughter on the cheek. Cynthia gives a smile and a wink to Hazel. Hazel starts to get out of her chair.
HAZEL
Excuse me; I have to go to the bathroom.
She gets up, and walks quickly to the bathroom.
ANITA
Sweetie, why don’t you go with her?
CYNTHIA
Of course, mom.
CUT TO:
INT- BATHROOM- NIGHT TIME
Hazel is in the bathroom. She is washing her hands in the sink. Cynthia walks in and starts to fix her hair in the sink.
CYNTHIA
Hi.
Hazel looks up in shock.
HAZEL
Oh, hi Cynthia.
CYNTHIA
So, I hear that you’re entering the
Race next week.
HAZEL
Yeah, I am.
CYNTHIA
Well, that’s funny. I’m going to
Be racing also.
HAZEL
Really?
CYNTHIA
Yeah, Dan said I should.
HAZEL
Oh.
Hazel sticks out her hand and faintly smiles.
HAZEL
Well, good luck.
CYNTHIA
Keep it. You’ll need a lot of it.
She walks past Hazel, and leaves the bathroom.
CUT TO:
INT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE- NIGHT TIME
They get home from dinner, and Hazel walks right upstairs.
AUNT SALLY
You should hang out with Cynthia
Some time. She’s such a sweet girl.
Hazel just walks upstairs to her room, and shuts the door.
CUT TO:
EXT- HAZEL’S BALCONY- LATE NIGHT
Hazel is sitting on her balcony looking out on the ocean. She sees that she has a new voice mail. She calls the number for her voicemail, and listens to the message.
MATILDA (V.O.)
Hazel, are you there? It’s me.
CUT TO:
INT- REHAB- EARLY EVENING
Matilda is at the rehab center. It’s a very beautiful place. She is sitting by a fountain in the yard. There are other people and staff walking around.
MATILDA
I was just calling to see how you
Were doing. It’s really beautiful
Here. I almost wish you were here
With me.
She glides her fingers across the water in the fountain.
MATILDA (cont’d)
I’m so sorry I never told you. I
Wish I could just make this whole
Thing go away, but I know I can’t.
If you never want to talk to me again,
I totally understand.
A nurse walks up to her to take her cell phone away.
MATILDA (cont’d)
I have to go. I’m not suppose to call
People while I’m here. It’s annoying,
I know. Well, I’ll be out by the end
Of the summer.
CUT TO:
EXT- HAZEL’S BALCONY- NIGHT TIME
Hazel is listening to the message. A tear rolls down her cheek as she listens to the message.
MATILDA (V.O)
Bye, Hazel. I miss you.
CUT TO:
EXT- REHAB- EARLY EVENING
Matilda shuts her phone. A staff member comes and takes her phone away. She continues to glide her fingers on the water.
CUT TO:
EXT- HAZEL’S BALCONY- NIGHT TIME
Hazel closes her phone. She looks at it for a second, and then gets into bed. She places her phone by the bed-side table, and goes to sleep.
CUT TO:
INT- HAZEL’S ROOM- EARLY MORNING
It’s about six thirty in the morning. Hazel’s phone vibrates. She groans, and picks it up.
HAZEL
Hello?
RILEY
Guess who?
MIKA
Good morning.
HAZEL
Riley? Mika?
She sits up in her bed.
RILEY
Meet us on the main beach by
Seven.
HAZEL
For what?!
RILEY
You’ll see.
They hang up the phone. Hazel closes the phone and flops out of bed.
CUT TO:
EXT- MAIN BEACH- EARLY MORNING
Hazel is walking down the beach trying to find Riley and Mika. She finds them setting up a make-shift obstacle course. Mika has a stop watch around her neck.
HAZEL
What the hell is this?
RILEY
Do you like it?
HAZEL
Seriously. What is it?
MIKA
If you’re going to compete, you’re
Going to need to get some muscle on
You.
HAZEL
Did we really have to do this?
RILEY
Well, we can do something else.
MIKA
Yeah, you don’t have to do this if
You don’t want to.
Hazel thinks about what she said. She remembers what happened with Cynthia the other night.
HAZEL
No, I want to do this. I have
To do this.
Riley and Mika are impressed with her.
MIKA
All right, just star over there
And follow us.
HAZEL
Okay.
Mika gets the timer ready.
MIKA
Ready. Go.
She runs up to an old TV box, and jumps over it.
RILEY
So how was dinner last night?
HAZEL
It was the dinner from hell.
RILEY
Why?
HAZEL
Because my Aunt’s friends just happen
To be the Velazquez family.
MIKA
You mean?
HAZEL
Yep.
Hazel crawls under the bed sheet like in the army.
HAZEL
An enchanted evening with Cynthia.
RILEY
Oh God, that does sounds like the dinner
From hell.
HAZEL
And to top it all off, she’s entering
The race too.
RILEY
What? That stupid little bitch. My
Grandmother could windsurf ten times
Better than her!
Hazel steps onto the balancing board, and tried not to wobble.
MIKA
Yeah, but your grandmother couldn’t
Get four guys to teach her how with
The snap of a finger.
RILEY
Well, you got me on that one. Okay,
Now ten sit ups.
CUT TO:
EXT- BOARDWALK- SAME TIME
Marcus is jogging down the boardwalk. He looks at the beach and vaguely recognizes someone. He stops for a minute, and he sees Hazel doing sit-ups with Riley and Mika standing next to her. Their voices can be heard faintly. He smiles, and continues jogging.
CUT TO:
EXT- BEACH- SAME TIME
Hazel finishes her ten sit ups and runs over to the pull up rope tied to the bottom of the boardwalk.
RILEY
Just don’t let her get to you.
She’s only trying to make you
Think you aren’t good enough.
MIKA
And believe me, you’re better
Than she’ll ever be.
HAZEL
Thanks, guys.
She finishes her pull ups, and drops to the ground. She lies on her back and catches her breath. Mika checks her time on the stop-watch. It reads five minutes and forty eight seconds.
HAZEL
I just can’t believe she ate an
Entire steak by herself.
RILEY
Well, you are what you eat.
Mika helps her up, and shows her the stop watch as they pick up their obstacle coarse.
MIKA
Five minutes and forty eight seconds.
Not bad for the first time.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN- MORNING TIME
Audrey walks in with a paper bag from the local restaurant. She also has a bag from the local health food store. Hazel, Riley and Mika are sitting on the floor reading a magazine.
AUDREY
Who wants some breakfast?
HAZEL
Thank God. I’m starving.
Marcus hears her, and comes out from the back. He grabs the small table from outside and places it in the middle of the room. Audrey sets out the breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes and home fries. She also takes a few packets of maple syrup, napkins, forks and knives out of the bag. Everyone grabs a fork and digs in. Audrey takes out her breakfast. Everyone looks up from eating to see what she’s eating.
RILEY
Could you please explain to me what
That is?
AUDREY
It’s a veggie meat ball sub with tofu
And organic tomatoes.
MIKA
Did you just say ‘veggie meat ball’?
AUDREY
Yeah.
MARCUS
That is the biggest oxymoron I have
Ever heard.
AUDREY
Well I’d rather eat this than eat
Some poor defenseless farm animal.
Riley is about to bite into a piece of bacon. Mika has already bitten into a piece. They both put it down instead. They instead go for the home fires. Audrey smiles, and goes back to eating her sub.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH- LATER
Marcus stops the car, and Hazel, Riley and Mika get out. They grab their windsurfing boards.
MARCUS
Hey, I won’t be able to pick you
Guys up until two.
RILEY
No problem.
She and Marcus pound their fists together. Mika does the same. They look over to see what they predicted. Cynthia is in the water on a windsurfing board with four guys teaching her how to windsurf. She stands on the board so they can look at her butt. They can hear her off in the distance.
CYNTHIA
Is this how you do it?
Hazel, Riley, Mika and Marcus look on disgust.
MIKA
Well surprise, surprise.
Marcus looks over to Hazel.
MARCUS
Hey, you go out there put that bitch
In her place.
HAZEL
I will.
He smiles at her, and starts the car.
MARCUS
See you guys, later.
They say good bye to him as he drives off. They grab their boards and head out to the water. Cynthia looks at them, and goes back to learning how to windsurf.
CUT TO:
We go to a montage of Hazel, Riley and Mika windsurfing.
-Riley catches a wave and spins in the air. She lands gracefully on the water.
-A shot from under the water. We see the bottom of Riley’s board land in the water and veer off to the right.
-Mika catches a wave and leaps into the air. She lands, and sharply turns.
-Riley jumps about 10 feet into the air, and falls off of her board. She gets back on her board, and continues to surf.
Hazel saw Riley’s wipe out. She surfs over to Riley to see if she is okay.
HAZEL
Are you all right?
RILEY
Yeah, I’m fine. I just slipped off
Of my board, that’s all.
HAZEL
Are you sure?
RILEY
Yes, I’m positive.
Mika comes over on her board.
MIKA
Hey, are you all right?
RILEY
Couldn’t be better.
She sees Cynthia windsurfing with the four guys helping her.
HAZEL
I think I’m going to take a break.
She surfs back to the beach, and puts her board by her towel. Her phone starts to ring. She gets her phone out of her bag and answers it.
HAZEL
Hello?
RICHARD
Hi, honey. It’s dad.
HAZEL
Dad, hi.
CUT TO:
EXT- COUNTRY CLUB- DAY TIME
Richard and Heather are by the pool. They have drinks sitting on the small table next to them.
RICHARD
Hey, princess. How have you been?
HAZEL
I’ve been good. How about you?
RICHARD
Oh, I’ve been fine. Have you been
Having a good time with Aunt Sally?
HAZEL
It’s been fun. It’s really nice here.
And I’ve even made some new friends.
RICHARD
You did? That’s wonderful, Hazel!
Heather looks up from her book.
HEATHER
Richard, is that Hazel?
RICHARD
Honey, I’m handing the phone over
To your mom, but I love you, bye.
HAZEL
Bye, Dad.
Richard hands the phone over to Heather.
HEATHER
Hazel, how are you?
HAZEL
I’m all right. What’s it like at home?
HEATHER
Oh, it’s been the same since you left.
Have you been having a good time?
HAZEL
Yeah, I’ve been having a great time.
The reception starts to get fuzzy.
HEATHER
Hazel? Honey, can you hear me?
HAZEL
Kind of.
HEATHER
Sweetie, the receptions getting really
Fuzzy, but will see you soon, and we
Love you.
HAZEL
What?
HEATHER
I said WE LOVE YOU!
HAZEL
Mom? Hello?
The reception is lost. Hazel closes her phone and puts it back in her bag.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH- EVENING
Hazel, Riley, and Mika walk over to Marcus’ car. They put their boards in the back, and get into the car.
MARCUS
Wow, you guys were out pretty late.
MIKA
Yeah, Riley had a major wipe out.
You should’ve seen it. It was
Hilarious.
Riley punches Mika in the arm.
RILEY
Shut up.
Marcus sees Hazel’s bright pink face in the rear view mirror.
MARCUS
Whoa.
HAZEL
What.
MARCUS
Your face! It’s pinker than your shirt!
HAZEL
It is?
She looks at her face in the mirror. She touches her face, and she winces.
HAZEL
Damn!
MIKA
Is it that bad?
HAZEL
Kind of. That, and it’s a dead give away
To my aunt.
RILEY
I know someone who can help.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN
Audrey is painting her nails on the couch by the table. Hazel, Riley, Mika and Marcus come in.
AUDREY
Hey guys, how was it?
RILEY
It was good, but we have a bit of a
Problem.
They bring Hazel to Audrey. She looks up from painting her nails. She leans back in surprise.
AUDREY
Does it hurt?
HAZEL
A little bit.
RILEY
Do you think you can cover it up?
AUDREY
Hmm. I think I’ve got something that
Will help.
Audrey gets her bag from behind the desk, and searches for her bottle of foundation. She finds it, and places it on the table.
AUDREY
Okay, sit down right here.
Hazel sits down, and Audrey starts to apply the make up.
HAZEL
What is this?
AUDREY
It’s this all natural foundation that’s
Made to cover up red parts of your skin,
Which in this situation would be your
Entire face.
She continues to cover up your face.
MARCUS
How did your face get that pink, anyway?
HAZEL
I don’t know. I guess my sun block wasn’t
A strong enough SPF.
MIKA
What do you usually use?
Hazel is quiet.
HAZEL
SPF 60.
Mika struggles not to burst out laughing, as does Riley and Marcus.
HAZEL
Go ahead.
They burst out laughing. Hazel starts to bite her lip.
AUDREY
Hey, there is nothing wrong with
Having fair skin. Don’t listen to
Them, Hazel. I think your skin is
Very beautiful.
HAZEL
Thanks, Audrey.
She finishes applying the make up. She pulls out a mirror, and shows Hazel her face.
AUDREY
There we go. You can’t even see it
Anymore.
Hazel looks at her reflection in the mirror and smiles.
RILEY
What did I tell you? This girl can
Work miracles.
She gives her sister a hug. Hazel’s phone starts to ring, she sees that it’s her Aunt Sally calling.
HAZEL
I have to go you guys.
MARCUS
Do you want a ride home?
HAZEL
If you don’t mind.
MARCUS
Of course not.
They walk out to his car. Audrey gives Marcus a teasing look. They get into the car, and drive off.
CUT TO:
INT- MARCUS’ CAR- EARLY EVENING
Marcus is driving Hazel home.
MARCUS
I saw you out on the water today.
HAZEL
Really?
MARCUS
Yeah, and you were awesome!
Hazel blushes.
MARCUS (cont’d)
Seriously, the first time you were
Out on the water, you were awful.
HAZEL
Oh, thanks! That makes me feel great!
She pushes Marcus, and laughs.
MARCUS
Hey! No punching the driver!
HAZEL
Says who?
They pull up to her house, and he punches her again.
MARCUS
Okay, that’s it.
He starts to lean in on Hazel and punch her. Hazel screams, and she starts to laugh. Marcus loses his balance, and falls on top of her. His face is very close to hers. He quickly gets off of her.
MARCUS
Sorry about that.
HAZEL
Oh, um, it’s okay.
There’s an incredibly awkward silence.
MARCUS
So, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.
HAZEL
Yeah. Oh, and thanks for the ride.
MARCUS
No problem.
Hazel starts to bite her lip. She quickly says good bye, and gets out of the car. Marcus watches her go, and then drives off.
CUT TO:
INT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE
Hazel’s closes the front door behind her, and drops her bag. She watches Marcus drive away. She smiles, and turns around to see her Aunt Sally standing behind her.
AUNT SALLY
Hi, Hazel.
HAZEL
Hi, Aunt Sally.
AUNT SALLY
How was your day?
HAZEL
It was nice.
She starts to go upstairs, but her Aunt Sally stops her.
AUNT SALLY
What did you do today?
HAZEL
I went to some of the shops in the
Boardwalk.
She starts walking up the stairs again.
AUNT SALLY
Oh, really? Which ones did you go to?
HAZEL
I went to the shop with the wind chimes
In the front.
AUNT SALLY
Did you get anything there?
HAZEL
Well, I just looked around, you know?
Plus I forgot to bring money.
AUNT SALLY
Oh. Well, it sounds like you had a nice
Day.
HAZEL
Yeah, it was.
She goes upstairs, and breathes a sigh of relief.
CUT TO:
A montage of the next 2 weeks. Hazel is working very hard to be ready in time for the race.
-Hazel stands at the start of the obstacle coarse. Mika and Riley are by her side. Mika starts the stop-watch, and Hazel starts the obstacle course.
-Hazel goes out to the water and windsurfs all the way to the end of the beach. She practices racing to the end of the beach. Cynthia whizzes by her, and gives her a wink.
- At Hang Ten: Audrey hands her foundation to Hazel as she applies it to her pink face.
-Hazel is at home, she’s icing her aching muscles. Aunt Sally walks by and looks in the room. She tries to shake it off, and walks to her room.
-Next Day: She wakes up early, and sneaks past her Aunt Sally’s room. She goes downstairs and closes the front door very quietly.
- Hazel starts the obstacle course. This time, she goes through it with speed.
-Hazel does her push ups with ease. She runs over to the pull ups.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH- LATE AFTERNOON
It’s the day before the big race. Hazel, Riley, Mika and Marcus are all windsurfing. Everybody is doing fine, until Hazel leaps into the air on her board. Riley, Mika and Marcus look at her in surprise.
MARCUS
What is she doing?
RILEY
Is she crazy?
Hazel slips off of her board in mid air, and falls into the water, with her board following shortly after. Hazel swims up to the top, and grabs her board while she catches her breath. Riley Mika and Marcus hurry over to her. Cynthia, who’s sitting on the beach with Dan, saw the whole thing, and is laughing at her.
RILEY
Are you okay?
HAZEL
Well, let’s see. My best friend is
in rehab for being a coke junkie, I’m
sent to spend the summer in a place
where most of the people don’t like me.
In fact, one girl wants to make my life
A living hell. And to top it all off,
I’m lying to my aunt who thinks I should
Hang out with the girl who hates me, my
Face is so pink it could pass for a balloon,
And I just fell off of my board in mid air
For everyone to enjoy! Other than that,
I’m just peachy!!
She starts to swim back to shore. Riley Mika and Marcus follow her.
RILEY
Well sorry for asking!
HAZEL
You should be!
MIKA
Hey! Both of you need to calm down.
Look, let’s just head back, and take
It easy for the rest of the day.
They get to shore, and take their boards to the car.
HAZEL
I’m sorry, but I have to back out.
MARCUS
What? Hazel, the race is tomorrow.
You’ve worked too hard to back out now.
HAZEL
But…
MARCUS
But what?
HAZEL
I can’t do this!! I just can’t, okay?!
RILEY
You guys, I think she needs to talk
To Audrey.
MIKA
I think that’s a good idea.
MARCUS
Yeah so do I.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN- EARLY EVENING
Audrey is sitting at the counter reading a magazine. Hazel Riley Mika and Marcus come in. Audrey can tell that Hazel isn’t feeling too well.
AUDREY
Hazel, are you okay?
RILEY
Audrey, do you think you can whip
Up one of your famous pep talks for
Hazel?
AUDREY
No problem.
She puts down the magazine, and gets up from behind the counter.
MIKA
Don’t worry. Audrey gives the best pep
Talks in the world.
She puts her arm over Hazel’s shoulder.
AUDREY
Come with me.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN ROOF- EARLY EVENING
Audrey takes Hazel up to the roof of the building. It overlooks the main beach. They both look out onto the ocean.
AUDREY
So what’s been bugging you lately?
HAZEL
Well, I fell off of my board today.
AUDREY
On the water, or in the air?
HAZEL
It’s was in the air. And I mean way
In the air.
AUDREY
Ouch, doesn’t sound fun.
HAZEL
Yeah. And, I don’t know. I guess everything
Just came spilling out of me.
She’s quiet for a minute as she looks out onto the beach.
HAZEL
And I don’t think I can race tomorrow.
Cynthia is a thousand times better than
Me.
AUDREY
Don’t say that. If you say it too many
Times, you’ll think that it’s true.
HAZEL
But it is true.
AUDREY
No it’s not.
She leads Hazel to the edge of the building.
AUDREY (cont’d)
Cynthia may think she can do it,
But she just doesn’t get it. She
Does it only because she wants to
Win more than anything. And you…
She looks at Hazel.
AUDREY
You do it because you want to. That’s
What makes you a great windsurfer.
They both look out to the setting sun.
AUDREY
Tomorrow, when you’re out there, I
Want you to think of nothing else but
How good you feel at that very moment.
Can you do that for me?
HAZEL
Yeah, I think I can.
Audrey smiles, and squeezes her. They start to walk back to the stairs.
AUDREY
You know what you need?
HAZEL
What?
AUDREY
You need a break. You’ve been training
So much, so I think you could use a
Little pre-race celebration. Just a bag
Of chips, some soda, what do you say?
HAZEL
I think it sounds great.
CUT TO:
INT- HANG TEN- NIGHT TIME
Everyone is gathered around a bag of chips, and a bag of pretzels. There is music playing on the stereo. They are drinking soda, laughing, and having a good time. Audrey stands up with her soda in hand.
AUDREY
Everyone, can I have your attention
Please?
They stop laughing, and direct their attention towards her.
AUDREY
Thanks. I would like to propose a toast.
She raises her soda.
AUDREY
To Hazel. We all know you will kick
Serious ass tomorrow!
Everyone toasts to that. They go back to talking and laughing.
RILEY
Wait, what was that whole thing about
Your friend being in rehab?
HAZEL
I’ll tell you later. I promise.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN- LATER THAT NIGHT
Cynthia and Dean are walking down the street near Hang Ten. They see that Hazel left her board outside. Cynthia gets an idea.
CYNTHIA
Hey, do you have anything sharp?
Dean searches around his pocket. He takes a pen out of his pocket.
DEAN
I got a pen.
CYNTHIA
That’ll work just fine.
She takes the pen from him. She sneaks over to the boards, and makes sure no one is watching.
DEAN
What are you doing?
CYNTHIA
Relax; I’ve got the perfect plan.
CUT TO:
INT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE- THE NEXT MORNING
Hazel is running downstairs. She is exited for the race today. She runs into the kitchen, where Aunt Sally is sitting down reading the newspaper, and having a leisurely breakfast. She sees Hazel grab a piece of toast, and shove it in her mouth.
HAZEL
Good morning Aunt Sally.
AUNT SALLY
Good morning, Hazel. Did you sleep
Okay?
HAZEL
Yeah, I slept great.
She grabs Aunt Sally’s orange juice, takes a sip, and gives it back to her. She runs out the door before Aunt Sally can say a word to her.
AUNT SALLY
I wonder what’s gotten into her.
CUT TO:
EXT- HANG TEN- MORNING TIME
Hazel is running down to Hang Ten. She sees Riley Mika and Audrey on her way there.
MIKA
Hey, slow down. You need some energy
For the race, remember?
HAZEL
Oh yeah. Sorry.
They get to Hang Ten, and notice something is wrong. Marcus pulls into the driveway when they get there. He gets out of the car, and sees the problem.
MARCUS
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me?!
The sail of Hazel’s board has been stabbed viciously. The board has also been damaged. It has scars going across the bottom. They all look at the board in shock and anger.
AUDREY
Whoever did this is so going to pay
For this!!
RILEY
Do we even need to guess who it is?
Hazel bends down and looks at the torn sail. She tries to suppress her anger.
MIKA
Well, what do we do now? None of our
Boards would be right for Hazel, and
The race is in fifteen minutes.
Marcus tries to think of something.
MARCUS
I think I’ve got something that might work.
I’ll be right back.
He runs to the back, and gets his own windsurfing board. He stands it up.
MARCUS
Come on the board for a second.
She steps onto the board. Marcus smiles.
MARCUS
Perfect.
HAZEL
Whose is this?
MARCUS
This is my board. In fact, it happens
To be my lucky board.
Hazel leaps up and hugs Marcus.
HAZEL
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Marcus starts to blush.
MARCUS
Hey, you deserve it.
They continue to hug watch other.
RILEY
Okay guys, nice little Kodak moment.
Now we’re moving on.
MIKA
She’s right. We have to hurry.
They load the board into the truck and speed off to the race.
CUT TO:
EXT- LOCAL BEACH- MORNING TIME
There is already a crowd gathered at the beach. The MC is labeling the buckets for bets. Cynthia is waiting by the side with Dan.
DAN
I wonder where Hazel is.
CYNTHIA
I don’t know. Maybe something came up.
Dan looks at Cynthia.
DAN
Okay, what did you do?
CYNTHIA
I didn’t do anything. I just gave her a
Little delay, that’s all.
DAN
I can’t believe you.
Cynthia grabs his arm and presses up against him.
CYNTHIA
Come on, honey. Don’t you want me
To win?
DAN
Not if you have to be a bitch about it.
Cynthia lets go of his arm and steps back.
CYNTHIA
Excuse me?
DAN
Honestly, why do you hate her so much?!
CYNTHIA
I have my reasons.
CUT TO:
Marcus quickly parks the car. They all jump out, grab the surf board and run.
MIKA
Do you think we’ll make it?
RILEY
If we get there in the next 5 seconds.
CUT TO:
The MC gets to the front of the crowd.
MC
Okay guys. The race is going to start
Soon, we just need to find Hazel.
She looks in the crowd to find her.
MC
Hazel, are you here?
She waits to see if anybody answers. A couple of people in the crowd look around to see if she has arrived.
MC
Okay, then. I guess by default,
The winner of the race is-
Hazel Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey are running down the beach.
HAZEL
Wait!! Stop, I’m here!!!
The crowd looks over and sees her. Cynthia’s smile immediately turns to a look of anger. Hazel runs to the front and catches her breath. She catches her breath in between words.
HAZEL
I’m sorry- I’m late.
MC
It’s okay. Are you ready to race?
HAZEL
Yeah, I’m ready.
MC
All right then. Everybody, place your bets.
The crowd takes out their money and places their bet. Most of the people place a bet on Cynthia and only a few places a bet on Hazel. When the crowd is gone, the buckets show that there is only a small amount of money in Hazel’s bucket.
MC
All right everybody, we all know how
It works. Racers get to the front of
The water.
Hazel and Cynthia get their boards to the edge of the water.
MC
On your mark, get set… GO!
They dash into the water, and paddle out. People in the crowd are cheering. Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey make their way to the front of the crowd.
At first, the race is tied. Hazel falls off of her board, and Cynthia gets the lead. She quickly gets back up on the board, and tries to catch up to her. Hazel doesn’t notice the cut on her leg.
Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey are all watching intently. When Hazel falls, Marcus grabs Audrey’s hand tightly. Audrey looks at Marcus.
AUDREY
Dude, chill.
MARCUS
Oh, sorry.
He lets go of her hand. Audrey sighs, and grabs his hand.
The finish line is close, and Hazel and Cynthia are now nose to nose. Hazel realizes what she has to do to win. She leaps up into the air. We can hear her heart-beat. She lands safely, and beats Cynthia by about half a foot.
Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey jump up and cheer. The audience claps and cheers also. Hazel comes onto the shore and runs over to them. She jumps up and hugs them. Cynthia goes onto the shore, and walks over to the crowd.
Hazel and Cynthia stand on either side of the MC. She raises Hazel’s arm in the air like at a boxing match.
MC
And the winner is Hazel!
The audience claps and cheers. Hazel walks over to the group and jumps up and down.
HAZEL
I did it! Holy shit I did it!
Cynthia walks past them. Hazel walks over to her, and sticks out her hand.
HAZEL
Hey, you did a great job.
Cynthia just looks at her hand.
CYNTHIA
I know.
HAZEL
All right, that’s it.
She slaps Cynthia across the face. She is totally shocked. Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey saw what she did, and are completely shocked.
MIKA
That just made my summer!
Marcus starts to walk over to her. Hazel looks at Cynthia, but doesn’t say a word.
CYNTHIA
See, that’s the kind of attitude that
Will never get you a boyfriend.
HAZEL
Wanna bet?
She turns around, and kisses Marcus right on the lips. Cynthia’s jaw hangs open. Riley Mika and Audrey are completely surprised by this.
RILEY
Wow.
Hazel and Marcus look at each other, and smile.
HAZEL
Thank you.
MARCUS
Don’t mention it.
She goes back to kissing him. Cynthia walks back to the shore to get her board. Hazel starts to feel faint.
MARCUS
Hey, what’s wrong?
HAZEL
Nothing, I’m just a little tired I guess.
She looks down at the cut on her leg, which has been bleeding heavily. Her legs wobble, and she falls to the ground.
RILEY
Hazel!!
Riley Mika and Audrey run over to where Hazel and Marcus are. Mika tries to keep her awake.
MIKA
Hazel? Hazel, come on, stay with me.
AUDREY
Marcus, get the car!
Hazel is starting to lose consciousness. Everything goes black.
CUT TO:
INT- DOCTOR’S OFFICE- LATER
Hazel wakes up in the doctor’s office. She looks around the room, and sees the bandage on her leg. The doctor comes in to talk to her.
DOCTOR
Hello, Hazel. My name is Doctor Brown.
You got quite a nasty cut on your leg
There.
HAZEL
I did?
DOCTOR
Yes. But don’t worry, there won’t be
Any permanent scars and it will heal
Pretty quickly. Just don’t go in the
Water for about five weeks.
Hazel moans.
DOCTOR
Oh, and you have a visitor.
HAZEL
I do?
The door opens. It’s Aunt Sally, who is looking extremely ticked off. The Doctor takes a hint.
DOCTOR
I’ll leave you two alone.
He leaves the room, and shuts the door behind him.
HAZEL
Well? Are you going to say something?
AUNT SALLY
I cannot believe you. I really can’t.
How dare you, to disobey me, and lie
To my face!
Hazel looks down at her feet. Aunt Sally marches over to where Hazel is.
AUNT SALLY
You look at me when I’m talking to you!!
This whole damn summer I have been trying
To make sure you would enjoy yourself. And
This is how I get repaid?! By you sneaking
Off like this to that stupid race?!
Aunt Sally continues to rant and rave, when suddenly Hazel raises her voice.
HAZEL
SHUT UP!!!!!
Aunt Sally suddenly is quiet.
AUNT SALLY
You watch what you say to me, young lady.
HAZEL
No, I’m not going to. And I’m not going
To do everything you say because you
Thinks it’s right for me. I am so sick
And tired of your constant judgment!
Aunt Sally is still stunned.
HAZEL (cont’d)
When I was out there, on the ocean.
I wasn’t thinking about you, or my
Parents or anything else. I was just,
Happy. I was happier than I have
Been this entire summer. If you think
It’s for slackers, it’s fine by me.
But I’m going to keep on doing it. You
Can’t stop me.
It’s quiet. Aunt Sally continues to stare at her. She turns around, and leaves the room. She slams the door behind her. Hazel smiles, and looks out the window.
CUT TO:
EXT- AUNT SALLY’S HOUSE- AFTERNOON
It’s about a week later and it’s times for Hazel to leave Johnson Shore. Hazel drops her last bag into the trunk of the car. Riley Mika Marcus and Audrey are all there to say good bye. She walks over to Mika and gives her a hug.
MIKA
I wish you didn’t have to leave.
HAZEL
I wish I didn’t too.
She looks over to Aunt Sally.
HAZEL
But then again…
They laugh, and hug each other. She moves over to Riley, who is trying not to get chocked up.
HAZEL
Riley? Are you okay?
RILEY
Yeah, I’m fine.
HAZEL
Really, cause it sounds like you’re
Getting chocked up.
RILEY
I’m not going to cry. Crying is for wimps.
Hazel gives her a teasing look. Riley finally cracks.
RILEY
But what the hell.
She gives Hazel a hug. Hazel moves to Audrey and immediately hugs her.
AUDREY
If you don’t come back next summer,
We are going to hunt you down.
HAZEL
Don’t worry. I’ll definitely be back.
She finally gets to Marcus, who she kisses passionately.
MARCUS
I’ll see you around.
HAZEL
Yeah, see you around.
She gets into the car, and waves good bye to them. The car pulls out of the drive way, and drives off.
CUT TO:
EXT- MATILDA’S HOUSE- AFTERNOON
It’s a couple of days after Hazel has come home. She is walking by Matilda’s house, when Matilda comes out and they spot each other.
MATILDA
Hi.
HAZEL
Hey. I got your message.
MATILDA
You did?
HAZEL
Yeah, I did. And it’s going to take
A while, but I will forgive you.
Matilda smiles.
MATILDA
Thanks. So, where were you this whole
Time anyway?
HAZEL
Are you in the mood for a really long
Story?
MATILDA
Sure, I don’t have anywhere to go.
They smile, and they start to walk down the street as Hazel tells the story.
The End
