Radial Head Replacement/Fixation

Sling 4 weeks

When will I go home? You will be discharged on the same day as the operation

What can I do? Gentle elbow range of movement

What can't I do? No lifting, no pushing, no pulling

Acute phase (0-4 weeks) Goals

o Pain and oedema control while protecting healing tissues o Prevent joint contractures o Independence and compliance in splint wear Rehabilitation o Progression from gravity assisted elbow extension, to active assist, to active

range of movement of elbow extension o Active range of movement of shoulder, wrist, and hand o Light putty exercises for grip once full ROM of digits is restored o Oedema control o No lifting, pushing, pulling Criteria for progression o Pain control

Intermediate phase (4-8 weeks) Goals

o Restore ROM in elbow Rehabilitation

o Advance to elbow flexion after 4 weeks o Increase elbow range of movement including supination & pronation o If >20degrees lack of extension or elbow flexion 8 weeks) Goals

o Restore full range of movement in elbow Rehabilitation

o Home exercise program to maintain range of movement, strength, proprioception and function
