|Reading Mission: |Children to read or support them to read this short story: |
|30 minutes |An owl hooted. Moonlight glimmered on the lake as I struggled through the brambles and bushes. |
| |“Whose idea was it to camp in the woods anyway?” James asked, as he freed himself from a snagging |
| |thorn. I didn’t respond, seething inside. It had been his idea, and now we were entirely lost. A cold |
| |wind whispered through the leaves, drowned out by our heavy plodding as we searched for our missing |
| |campsite. |
| |“Harry must have gone to sleep and turned off the lamp,” James muttered. “I’m sure it was around here |
| |somewhere.” His torch and mine swept over the trees, and moths fluttered through the beams. I turned to|
| |face him. |
| |“Well, what now?” I asked, bitterly. James didn’t respond, his eyes wide and round as dinner plates. |
| |His torchlight wobbled and shook, and without another word he turned and vanished into the darkness. |
| |Slowly, with a prickling sensation down my spine, I turned around. |
| | |
| |After they can answer these questions. These can be verbal answers or they could be written down or |
| |typed. Children could even draw their responses. Suggested answers are in italics. |
| |What time of day is it? |
| |Night time, because owls are active at night/the moon is out/they are lost in the dark. |
| |How many people are out camping? |
| |Three. The narrator, James, and Harry. |
| |What do you think “seething” might mean? |
| |Angry (or synonym). They can find this from the context of how they might feel if someone got them lost|
| |in the woods at night. |
| |What might James have been feeling before he ran into the woods? |
| |Scared (or synonym), because his eyes were wide and his hand (holding his torch) was shaking. |
| |Were the boys having a nice walk? Why or why not? |
| |No – it was dark and they were unhappy/it was difficult to walk through the plants/they are tired and |
| |want to sleep. |
| |What do you think happened next? |
| |Sensible answer, providing reasoning from the text. |
|Writing Mission: |Today they are writing a letter to describe their monster to a friend. Your child has drawn their |
|30 minutes |monster and labelled it with expanded noun phrases which will help them write about it today. |
| | |
| |If they wish, they can use one of the following openings: |
| | |
| |Dear ______. |
| |Earlier today, I was walking in the park when I saw… |
| | |
| |Dear _______, |
| |Earlier today, I was playing in my garden when I saw… |
| | |
| |The writing should include: |
| |Fronted adverbials (see yesterday’s reading for examples) |
| |Expanded noun phrases (from the plan) |
| |Similes and metaphors (eyes like gemstones, its mouth was a dark cave) |
| |Adverbs of time and cause (When we … , As I … , Whenever he … ,) |
| | |
| |There are adjective word mats provided in the General Resources section. |
|Maths Mission: |The monsters are having a party! They need enough items for 12 monsters to attend the party, but they |
|30 minutes |only have £25 budget to spend. See the sheet below for item prices. |
| | |
| |Each monster needs 1 decoration item, 1 drink and 2 different pieces of food. They need at least 1 |
| |birthday banner and a cake. |
| | |
| |What is the least amount of money that the monsters could spend? (Party poppers 75p, water £1.20, |
| |nuggets £2, lollipops £1.20, banner 80p, cake £3 - £8.95 altogether.) |
| | |
| |What change would they get from £25? (25.00 – 8.95 = £16.05) |
| | |
| |If every monster now needed 3 different pieces of food, what would the least amount of money they could|
| |spend be now? (Party poppers 75p, water £1.20, nuggets £2, lollipops £1.20, mini sandwiches £2.40, |
| |banner 80p, cake £3 - £11.35 altogether.) |
| | |
| |The birthday monster invites another 4 monsters to the party. Can they still afford to run the party? |
| |(Add 1 more party poppers (£1.50), 1 more water (£1.80), 3 cheapest foods are now sandwiches x 4 |
| |(£3.20), lollipops x 2 (£2.40) and chocolate biscuits (21p x 16, £3.36), banner 80p and cake x 2 (£6). |
| |Total - £19.06). |
| | |
| |The monsters want to hire MonDonald’s for their party. It costs £10 to do this. Can they still afford |
| |the party? No. |
| | |
| |If they decided not to go to MonDonald’s but spend all of their £25, what could the monsters buy to use|
| |as much money as possible? Various answers to investigate. |
|Topic Mission: |By the end of this mission, children will have made their own worry monster. Worry monsters are |
|Day 1 |friendly monsters that nibble up worries and make them go away! |
| | |
| |Part 2: Today the children will use their designs to start to gather materials and begin to make their |
| |worry monster. We have left 2 days for this activity as it may be something the children wish to come |
| |back to over a couple of days or they may do it all in one afternoon! |
| | |
| |Remember your design criteria: the monster must be able to be placed in my bedroom, it must be able to |
| |take or listen to my worries (a hole or slot perhaps). Remember, the monsters could be make from junk |
| |modelling and recycling from around the house, a picture they have designed and coloured and then cut |
| |out, use of basics at home such as a plastic cup or tissue box or they could get creative and sew |
| |something. Use whatever is available to you and your household. |

These Missions have been designed to be accessible, using little resources and most importantly fun for your children to complete. Please use what you can, any resources you do not have could be substituted for something else and suggestions have been made for this where possible.
