3. To:

Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom about ourselves, others, and the world through sustained reflection on general questions – e.g. what is the nature of thought, what is the purpose of life – arising from the human experience. Philosophy is thus both a body of knowledge and a set of skills. The Department of Philosophy offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge of the best of philosophical literature and to develop their own skill in analysis and argument, both written and oral.

The Department offers students a Major leading to the BA. Students who Major in Philosophy may choose either Option A: Knowledge and Reality or Option B: Ethics and Public Policy. The Department also offers a Minor in Philosophy and participates in the interdisciplinary programs in Linguistics.

12-CREDIT MINOR IN PHILOSOPHY

4. Rationale: Some of the changes above - adding a description of philosophy, renaming Option A to better reflect the program, and eliminating a misleading reference to a women’s studies option - aim at clarifying the program and options for philosophy majors. Other changes – dropping certain substitution courses, adding other courses - reflect an attempt to achieve parity between Options A and B and to make them more rigorous. The criteria for honors have also been made more rigorous.

DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of change: New Course

2. Course Description: PHI 251: History of Philosophy IV: 20th Century. 3 hours, 3 credits. Philosophical movements of the 20th century.

3. Rationale: Several key philosophical movements began or flourished in the 20th century. These developments, and the period in question, are currently not adequately addressed by any of the department’s history of philosophy courses. The department therefore agrees that it needs to include a course on philosophical movements of the 20th century. We are narrowing the focus of PHI 244: History of Philosophy III to compliment this course.

4. Learning Objectives/Assessment Strategies: Students who complete the course will be familiar with a range of philosophical ideas and movements characteristic of the 20th century as well as with the principal objections posed to those ideas and movements. Students will develop an awareness of how current issues in philosophy emerge out of this historical context.

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of Change: Change in Number

2. From: PHI [166]: Philosophy of Freedom. 3 hours, 3 credits. Examination of a broad range of philosophic questions whose unifying theme is the idea of freedom. Topics may include liberation strategies for both individuals and social groups, freedom as an ultimate category or value, and the concept of freedom present in most modern philosophies.

3. To: PHI 176: Philosophy of Freedom. 3 hours, 3 credits. Examination of a broad range of philosophic questions whose unifying theme is the idea of freedom. Topics may include liberation strategies for both individuals and social groups, freedom as an ultimate category or value, and the concept of freedom present in most modern philosophies.

4. Rationale: The change reflects the department’s judgment that the numerical list of its courses should not begin with a course this peripheral and specialized. The goals and objectives of the program will be unaffected by this number change.

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of Change: Change in Number

2. From: PHI [168]: Philosophy of Contemporary Music. 3 hours, 3 credits. A critical examination from a philosophic point of view of contemporary genres of music. Topics may include a philosophic analysis of the meaning and value of forms, such as rap music, within their cultural contexts and in relation to the larger American society.

3. To: PHI 177: Philosophy of Contemporary Music. 3 hours, 3 credits. A critical examination from a philosophic point of view of contemporary genres of music. Topics may include a philosophic analysis of the meaning and value of forms, such as rap music, within their cultural contexts and in relation to the larger American society.

4. Rationale: The change reflects the department’s judgment that the numerical list of its courses should start with a foundational course. The learning goals and objectives of the program are unaffected by this number change.

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of Change: Change in Description

2. From: PHI 174: Theories of Human Nature. 3 hours, 3 credits. [The contrast between traditional religiously based views of human nature and the post-Darwinian views based within the framework of modern science.]

3. To: PHI 174: Theories of Human Nature. 3 hours, 3 credits. A consideration of several different views of human nature both pre- and post-Darwinian, and within and outside the bounds of contemporary science.

4. Rationale: The change reflects the department’s judgment that the description of the course is unduly restricted (e.g. does not cover pre-Darwinian figures such as Hobbes, Rousseau, Locke, Descartes, or Kant.) The change in description will have no impact on the department’s goals and objectives.

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of Change: Change in Number, Description, and Pre-requisite

2. From: PHI 229: Critical Reasoning. 3 hours, 3 credits. [An intensive study of reasoning patterns as they occur in explanatory and justificatory discourse typical of the various liberal arts and sciences. Exercises will be taken from a number of disciplines and from such exams as the L.S.A.T., M.C.A.T., and G.R.E.. No previous study of logic is required. PREREQ: Successful completion of a 200-level (or above) course in any of the liberal arts or sciences or of a distribution course in at least four of the seven areas.]

3. To: PHI 169: Critical Reasoning. 3 hours, 3 credits. Introduction to the concepts and methods of thinking, reading, and writing analytically and evaluatively. No previous study of logic or philosophy is required.

4. Rationale: The deletion of a pre-requisite and the change in number reflect the department’s belief that critical reasoning is foundational. The change in description represents its judgment that the current description is both unclear and inappropriately restricts the course to a test-prep.

CURRICULUM CHANGE

1. Type of Change: Change in Title and Description

2. From: PHI 244: History of Philosophy III: [Contemporary]. 3 hours, 3 credits. [Intensive reading and critical examination of some of the principal writings of major thinkers since Kant. 3. To: PHI 244: History of Philosophy III: Later Modern. 3 hours, 3 credits. Western philosophical thought from Kant through the 19th century.

4. Rationale: The current title (‘Contemporary’) does not represent the intended time period. The change in description serves to clarify the intended content. Clarification of title and description aligns the course with our goal of providing knowledge of major philosophical problems and positions.

3. To: PHI 362: Analytic Philosophy. 3 hours, 3 credits. Intensive study of the writings of Moore, Russell, Carnap, Wittgenstein, and others.

4. Rationale: The change in number reflects the department’s judgment that with a lower number the course will be more accessible to students. This will help serve our goal of providing knowledge of the main positions and problems in philosophy. The change in title reflects the fact that the content mentioned in the description is not contemporary.

4. Rationale: The addition of PHI 232, 235, 236, 247, and 250 recognizes that any 200 level philosophy course in a related area would adequately prepare students for this course.
