FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
SOME THOUGHTS FROM FATHER PACKARD#
Bishop Emeritus Donald W. Trautman, former Bishop of the Diocese
of Erie, died Saturday evening, February 26th, at St. Mary*s Home, in
Erie, Pennsylvania. Bishop Trautman, who was 85, served the
Diocese of Erie as its ninth bishop for twenty-two years. He was
installed in July 1990 and continued until July, 2012, when Pope
Benedict XVI accepted the required letter of resignation he had
submitted at the age of 75. During his time as bishop, Bishop
Trautman distinguished himself as a man of letters, mercy, and gifted
homilist. Shortly after moving into the bishop*s residence in
downtown Erie, he recognized the needs of the homeless community
in Erie and established the Bishop*s Breakfast Program, which
provided breakfast on weekday mornings at the nearby St. Paul
United Church of Christ. Nationally, Bishop Trautman had a
significant impact on the liturgy of the Church. He was a vocal
proponent of inclusive language in the liturgy and served twice as
chairman of the Bishops* Committee on the Liturgy, working closely
on revisions to the Roman Missal.
Bishop Trautman was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1936, and was
ordained to the priesthood in 1962. He served in a number of
capacities in the Buffalo diocese before coming to Erie, and was the
Auxiliary Bishop for his home diocese. After his retirement, Bishop
Trautman resided at St. Mary*s Asbury Ridge, and remained active as
a writer, lecturer and retreat master until the final year of his life.
Funeral arrangements for Bishop Trautman are as follows:

Please take some time this week to remember any of the religious
women who were a part of your life. If they might still be alive, how
about writing them a card and letting them know how much you
appreciated their presence in your life. If they have gone to their
heavenly reward, remember them in your prayers!
SYNOD NEWS Over the last few weeks our bulletin contained all
sorts of information about the upcoming SYNOD that Pope Francis
has called the worldwide Church to participate in in 2023. This is BIG
stuff!! It is the hope of Pope Francis to give everyone a chance to
speak about the Church in the world today. This opportunity is
scheduled to happen here in Titusville Saturday, March 19th, from
10AM to 12 Noon, in the St. Walburga Social Hall. This special
session about the Synod will be facilitated by Sister Tina and Sister
Marian. Please come and be a part of this historic opportunity!!
The Lenten Penance Services have been scheduled for our Oil City
Deanery, and the Penance Service for St. Titus parish is scheduled
for Sunday, March 20th, at 3:00PM. Note that all Penance Services
at parishes in our Deanery are scheduled for Sunday afternoons. It is
easier for the priests to be present as well as having them in daylight
hours is more appealing to many people. Mark your calendars for the
Lenten Penance Service at St. Titus!
Stations of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
will take place this Thursday evening at 7:00PM. Stations of the
