RESIDENT DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE OF CALIFORNIA

The Resident Director (RD), reporting to the Director of Residential Experience, is a member of the Office of Residential Experience staff responsible for developing and nurturing a safe, inclusive and engaged community. The RD is a caring presence, accessible to all students, who supports, inspires and challenges residents to achieve academic and personal success. The RD supports the learning outcomes of the undergraduate Resident Advisor (RA) position through mentorship, supervision and presence. Together with the RA, the RD is an inspirational member of the Residential Experience staff who not only promotes the success of students’ academic and personal growth, but also leads the residential community so that a home is created for all students. This is a live-in position that generally requires 20 or more hours of availability during the evenings/weekends on a weekly basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic & Personal Development of Residents

A. Be regularly available, approachable, accessible, and engaging.

B. Respond to, address and debrief individual and residential community issues and concerns.

C. Promote and respond to residents’ transitional and experiential needs.

D. Assess community needs on a regular basis.

E. Work with RA to mediate resident disputes and/or roommate conflicts.

F. Promote academic, spiritual, personal and interpersonal growth in the residential community.

G. Participate in and implement educational programs and community development activities.

H. Promote respect, personal and social responsibility, academic and social engagement through role modeling, distinct programming and open dialogue within the hall.

Community Life and Student Conduct

A. Be knowledgeable of the Code of Conduct and College policies.

B. Be knowledgeable of appropriate campus resources and protocol for hall emergency response.

C. Maintain on-going and timely communication with the Director of Residential Experience regarding concerns in the residence halls.

D. Consult Director of Residential Experience as needed when student issues arise.

E. Address and document student contact and conduct involving conflicts, disputes and Code of Conduct and/or College policy violations.

F. Respond to health and safety concerns (i.e. emotional distress, psychological distress, etc) and contact appropriate College personnel.

Resident Advisor Mentorship & Supervision

A. Meet with RA on a regular basis to provide supervision, mentorship and support.

B. Assist RA in development of a safe, inclusive, and engaged residential community.

C. Support RA in promotion and implementation of the residential curriculum and residential education.

D. Ensure RA holds regular and informative hall meetings.

E. Promote the leadership development of the RA through mentorship, reflective discussion and evaluation.

F. Complete ongoing assessment of RA, including written evaluations.

Administrative Responsibilities

A. Maintain on-going and timely communication with the Director of Residential Experience regarding events, residential updates and hall information.

B. Requirement of participation in all training and RD meetings.

Ensure appropriate maintenance of physical plan of residence hall.

C. Be present and available for large annual events (Move In Days, major student events, major athletic events).

Communicate any travel plans (two nights or more consecutive), including but not limited to January Term travel, to Director of Residential Experience.

Complete assessment of RA, including written evaluations.

Requirement of participation in the RA recruitment, selection and placement process.

Together with RA, serve as a conduit of information between the College and residents.

Manage programming funds by maintaining accurate records and accountability of College resources.

Requirement of participation on a minimum of one Residential Experience committee(s).

Other duties as assigned by Director of Residential Experience and as particular to area of residence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

▪ Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree in counseling, student personnel, or related experience preferred.

▪ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse college students in a group living environment.

▪ Demonstrated commitment to Saint Mary’s College and its Liberal Arts, Catholic, and Lasallian mission.

▪ A Christian Brother, or full-time faculty or full-time staff member affiliated with Saint Mary’s College. Saint Mary’s College graduate students are considered, though not preferred.

▪ The RD position is a live-in role and the on-campus apartment must serve as the RD’s primary residence.
