Addressing the Needs of Educators and Planting the Seeds of Classroom Wellness.

Numerous advances have been made with technology. There are several apps and programs that can help children who have difficulty with handwriting. Whether they have a difficult time keeping up in class, or just have a hard time with producing neat handwriting there are several apps and programs available that can make things easier for them, and you!

• Dragon Dictation: Dragon Naturally speaking software is a tool that enhances a student’s ability to access materials by allowing them to speak for text or listen to text. This is a free app that can be used on Google Chrome and through the app store for iPad and iPhone. It can also be purchased for a desktop computer and includes extended features. Dragon allows students to dictate their papers and assignments while removing the barrier of a keyboard. Dragon will also read aloud text to the student. An internet connection is required to use this program.

• Google Voice to Typing – This is another free program that works on Google Chrome, iPhone/iPad and Android devices. It supports 48 different languages and is fairly user friendly. When using this program, the user must speak words for punctuation (i.e. Comma, period, new paragraph, new line, etc). Also, the user is unable to correct mistakes using voice; they must be fixed using a keyboard. An internet connection is not required to use this program.

• SnapTypeApp – This app was designed for students/teachers to take a photo/import a worksheet/assignment and use the ipad to type in answers. The app is free in the app store. Students take a picture of their assignment and insert a text box for inputting their answers. Voice recognition software can also be used with this app. Font size is modifiable along with the capability to zoom in if needed.
