Fluency Intervention

Grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th

The Read Naturally program provides instruction in the area of reading fluency. Fluency is the rate and intonation of the reading process. The design of the program is based on three major principles: teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. In the teacher modeling phase students model good reading skills from the teacher as well as pre-recorded stories that are included in the program. The students are then assigned a reading passage of 100 – 200 words that they practice repetitively until they reach the appropriate level of reading fluency for that passage. The teacher and student jointly determine a goal for how well the student should do at their final reading. Throughout the teacher monitors the student’s progress. As the student’s reading fluency and reading level improve, the student is assigned more difficult and challenging reading passages. The program has thirteen reading levels ranging from 0.5 – 8.0. In addition, the student’s progress is charted so that the student can see their individual progress and be motivated to continually improve.

The Reading Naturally program utilizes the following steps to help students improve their reading fluency. Select a story, Read along to the key words, Write a prediction, Cold timing, Graph the cold timing scores, Read along to the story, Practice reading the story, Answer the questions, Pass timing, Graph the pass timing score, Write a retelling of the story.
