Reading fluency lesson plan using an ipad

Objective(s): SW: Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.Materials: iPads, ZPD leveled text for each student, digital publishing app (Educreations, Show Me, Explain Everything, Doceri, Notebook+)Procedures: Teacher will model how to use the digital publishing app by creating a file.Find an appropriate passage to read aloud (informational, literature, poem, list, song lyrics, etc.) and maybe model what fluent reading with expression sounds like as a practice run before putting it to a recording Open the app on the iPad and tap the picture icon. You will be prompted to either choose a picture from the cameral roll or to take a picture with the camera. Choose the camera and take a picture of the selected passage.Accept the picture.Time to record the text. Push the record button. It may look like a red circle or a microphone. You my be prompted to “Allow the app to use the microphone.” Select “yes” or “continue” to allow. Say your name and then start reading the text aloud.Once you are finished, stop the recording. Now you will need to save the file. Each app will have a different process. Some save it online, some save it directly to the camera roll and others save it in the app. Here’s where it gets tricky. If you have a few iPads, maybe have the students work in groups to create a couple using a limited amount of text as guided practice. If you have a class set (lucky ducks!), have each student create one as guided practice. Or, select a student to come up and replicate the process.Time to implement as a literacy center. Load up the literacy center with written directions, a helper (if you have one and feel it is needed). Try to have guidelines as to how much text you want students to read. Is there a specific passage you want them to practice? Or, should they be reading from the basal or a self-selected book? Should they pick their favorite part of the story? It’s up to you. Assessment: Informal: Have students listen to their own recording and rate themselves or share it with a classmate to get another opinionMore Formal: Take the iPad and listen to each student’s recording. Since the text has been photographed, you will be able to listen for miscues to better assist the students with their accuracy as well as their expression and fluency.Extensions:Have a literacy task associated with the recording:Circle all the … (various parts of speech, sentence types, etc.) in the passageFind an example of a word that matches one of your spelling patterns for this week. Underline the example.Create a second page to the digital publishing app and draw/write/record a prediction/summary for how the story should/does continue. Each app will have its limitations and pros and cons. If this activity interests you, but maybe scares the nonsense out of you because it involves technology…email me. I can come model it for you and your students and even stick around to facilitate while the students are completing the activity. ................
