Great Strategies for Helping your Child Study at Home:

• Pull worksheets/activities from folders and notebooks for extra practice

• Create flashcards for quick review

• Keep the study guide and answer key out and easily accessible at home

• Take advantage of the websites and review games created by your child’s teacher (found on the third grade website – dolsengrade23.)

We are beginning to wrap up our Place Value and Rounding unit and math workshop is going very well! We have been reviewing both topics this past week and will continue to review on Monday. The test will be on Tuesday, October 18th. Feel free to give your child practice problems over the weekend to review and have them explain to you how they got their answer.

Examples:

-Round the following numbers to the nearest ten:

39, 58, 23, 45

-Round the following numbers to the nearest hundred:

390, 842, 198, 550

-What is the value of 4 in the number 942?

-What is the value of the 8 in the number 80,341?

-Review the places up to ten-thousand.

Our first week of Math Strips homework has been successful. Most students are remembering to complete just one strip per night and to keep the page in their binders all week long. Great job, third graders! (

There have been some questions regarding the “My Spelling Dictation” part of the packet.

To clear up confusion, students are to write two sentences that include some of their spelling words. If they can come up with sentences that include more than two spelling words, great! Really, if the sentences make sense – the more spelling words the better!

Writing Workshop

This week students worked hard to finish their personal narratives. They worked in partners to revise and edit one another’s work, along with conferencing with me. Most students are ready to publish! We cannot wait to celebrate our published work!

Please ask your child about revising and editing. There is a portion of the SLRA that requires them read another student’s work, answer questions about it and edit it.

Reading Workshop

This week we finished The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. It is one of my favorite third grade read aloud books. The students seemed to agree! If your child hasn’t mentioned this story, please ask them about it! (

This week we reflected on our reading log summaries. Students did an awesome job going through the checklist and analyzing their homework performance. Keep up the great effort!

Next week, we will be preparing for our fall reading assessment. The best way for your child to prepare for this assessment is to continue reading at home. Also, please ask them about the test taking strategies they’re learning in class.
