Independent Reading Rules and Checklist:

Independent Reading Rules

1. During the course of the marking period each student is responsible for reading a variety of book genres. You may pick the genres, unless you are told to read a specific genre.

• By reading 3 or more genres, you are guaranteed a “4” in “Reads a Variety of Genre,” because you consistently read a variety of text independently.

• By reading 2 genres, you are guaranteed a “3” in “Reads a Variety of Genre,” because you occasionally read a variety of text independently.

• If you are reading books of the same genre and need constant reminders to select a different genre, you may receive a “2” in “Reads a Variety of Genre,” because you need constant reminders.

2. When you finish your book, you must complete a Book Card or other option with the proper information. Then, you will submit (give) it to me.

3. After you submit your Book Card, you place an “X” on the reading chart next to your name. The book must have at least 135 pages to count for that genre. See me if you have any questions about your book.

4. You may read books less than 135 pages. However, you will not be given credit toward that genre and you will not be allowed to enter the book onto the reading chart next to your name.

5. Any books you read that are less than 135 pages will still go toward your grade for “Invests Time and Effort.” But, they will not go towards the genre and the reading chart.

6. At the conclusion of the marking period, the number of genres you read, along with the total number of pages you read will contribute toward your report card grades for “Reads a Variety of Genre” and “Invests Time and Effort.”

Go for the “4” and learn about all the wonderful genres of literature we are grateful to have at our fingertips!
