10 STEPS TO A GOOD RESUME – PRINT THESE DIRECTIONS
10 Steps to a Good Resume – Print these directions
1. Download the resume template found on my site
2. Carefully type in your personal information at the top – DO NOT delete the text there – just highlight it and type over it. PLEASE, if your formatting goes crazy, call me and don’t continue working!!
3. Under “OBJECTIVE” you will write a statement that shows your long-term goal such as:
“To enroll in Welding at NSCC and to pursue further study to obtain Red Seal Welding certification.”
Or
“To enroll in the Auto Service Repair program at NSCC and pursue education toward qualifications as a licensed automotive technician.”
Or (useful if you don’t have a concrete plan yet)
“To pursue post-secondary study in an area that will lead to qualification in a trade.”
Feel free to borrow any of these that work for you.
NOTE: there is no such thing as “a resume.” Each resume should be tailored to a particular purpose, so for example, a resume for Sobeys might have something like “ seeking a part-time warehouse or shelving job” but for this exercise we are making a very GENERIC resume that can sit in your portfolio (more on that later)…
4. Skills and Qualifications: copying from your resume worksheet, begin with all your certifications (as in sample template). Next, pick about 4 or 5 skills that you would like to mention (checklist is helpful for this).
5. In the Education section, you are free to copy directly from the sample, but be sure that you have the correct grade level.
6. In the employment section you need to pay attention to several things:
This is where formatting is likely to mess up the most – be careful
• All experiences should be listed from the current or most recent one backwards to the least recent. If you’ve had more than 3 jobs including job shadowing, stop at 3.
• When you list a job, describe in as much detail what you did there; use strong words like “responsible for” or “managed” or “took charge of” whenever possible to show that you have leadership and initiative qualities.
7. In the volunteer/hobbies /interests section, begin with volunteer work (see sample for how to word school volunteer experience) Firefighter experience should be first if you have it.
After the volunteer work, continue on by listing hobbies and interests (you don’t need to label this separately). Include sports (name them) outdoor activities (like running, fishing, hunting, ATV’s , dirt biking) and if you play any league sports, say who you play for. If you play a musical instrument, say so.
If you enjoy working on cars, say so, or small engines or stuffing pelicans or whatever it is you enjoy.
The object of this section is to show an employer that you are an interesting person with an interesting life who is eager for new experiences. It also speaks loudly about what it doesn’t say – that you spend all your free time hanging around the mall or in the Plaza parking lot – in other words, wasting time (as the employer sees it).
If you are short on interests or volunteer work, now is the time to beef this section up. For people with limited work experience, this section will indicate to a boss that you are not just lumping around playing video games (and, therefore, might be likely to if she hires you!) So get out there and DO SOMETHING with your extra time!!!!
8. If you’re doing this right, you will soon learn that there is NO SUCH THING as “my resume”. (as stated above) Each time you need one, you will need it for a different purpose, and each time you will want to change your objective and also play up strengths you might have that they will really need in that particular job.
For example:
Meat department at Sobey’s
• Good communication skills; experienced with customer service
• Excellent Math skills (you need to weigh things)
• Good hand-eye coordination or good working with my hands (you’ll need this to cut meat)
Job as landscaper
• Able to work with limited supervision (they can trust you to cut the grass by yourself without cutting down someone’s rosebushes)
• Experienced with a wide range of home maintenance tools (you know your way around everything from a shovel to a pressure washer)
9. Every time you have a new job shadow experience, or work experience, go back and update your resume to include these
10. It should be fairly obvious, but in case it isn’t, a smooth, wrinkle – free, neat, unstained, clearly printed resume on good paper with NO spelling or grammatical errors says LOTS about you:
• You CARE
• You won’t screw up someone’s business
• You can handle yourself well (at least well enough to produce a good resume)
If you REALLY want the job, take the time and effort to get this right, but remember, handing out a good resume is just the beginning of a good job search!!!!
