Absences

If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please phone the school office before 9 a.m. A voice mail message may be left at 604-296-9000. Be sure to state your child’s name, teacher’s name and the reason for the absence. Shortly after 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. our secretary, Mrs. Ciaburri, will contact parents of children whose absence is unaccounted for.

If your child has a communicable disease or is going to be absent for a prolonged period (e.g. more than two weeks), please inform the administrative office as soon as possible. The Burnaby School Board employs a visiting teacher to help homebound students with their studies. A note from the doctor is required.

Lunch Hour

It is preferable for students to go home for lunch. Some students, however, may need to eat lunch at school. If children are eating at school, they are required to remain on the school grounds during the lunch break and are not permitted to leave the grounds without written permission from parents. Students who go home for lunch are to remain outdoors along with the other students until the bell rings for entering the building. Armstrong School offers a hot lunch program to the students at our school. A menu and envelope are sent home at the end of each month. If you wish to participate, fill out the envelope and return to the school by the indicated deadline.

Before school, children will remain outdoors until the bell rings at 8:55 unless attending scheduled rehearsals for music practices, sports activities or other organized events.

Electronic Devices

Please do not send electronic devices (iPods, cell phones, cameras, etc.) to school with your child. Students are not permitted to use any electronic devices during the school day, including the recess and lunch break. If your child needs to contact, you they may use the office phone.

Bicycles

For safety reasons, skateboards, roller skates, scooters and bicycles must not be ridden on the school grounds, in the driveway or in the parking lot. If brought to school, bikes must be locked in the bicycle racks and other vehicles with wheels need to be kept in the classroom until the 3:00 p.m. dismissal bell.

Personal Items

Each year our Lost and Found fills up with items of clothing. Unfortunately, some of the items are not labeled and cannot be returned to the owner. Please clearly mark all articles of clothing with your child’s name. Also, please be reminded that students are not to bring toys, games, or sports equipment to school without teacher permission. If your child has lost an item, please check the Lost and Found Bin located in the hallway directly behind the office. Also, for smaller items please check with the office.

West Coast Recess

At Armstrong School we very rarely keep students inside due to the weather conditions. Many schools in the district are doing the same and with good reason, as we will explain further below. Please ensure that your child is well prepared for rain on any given day. The biggest complaint our students have on rainy days is that they are cold. We encourage them to bring an extra sweater and bundle up. Interestingly, they rarely complain of cold on snow days so they clearly know what to wear on our coldest days [pic] .

Being prepared for the weather

We have also spoken to the students about finding ways to avoid getting so wet that a call needs to be made home for a change of clothing. We encouraged the kids to:

▪ Wear a rain coat

▪ Wear rubber boots so they can enjoy the puddles (if you are able to provide them with a pair to keep at school that would be perfect)

▪ Wear “muddy buddies” – rain pants they can quickly slip over their clothes (much like they would snow pants)

▪ Bring an umbrella

▪ Wear a rain hat

▪ Bring a change of clothes just in case [pic]
