The staff at Andros Karperos School strives to create the best educational setting for your child. We take great pride in working to improve our level of service each and every year. Our staff understands how our program can best serve the community, while at the same time, maintains a high level of reflection and accountability in an effort to pursue educational and instructional excellence. You will find that our staff works diligently to foster a friendly and safe environment for your child. Effective adult to student ratios for supervision, anti-bullying programs, an active counseling staff and regular trainings are just some of the ways we make our campus safe for the community. We understand that an effective learning environment must first be a comfortable one for your child. Both our elementary and middle school programs offer academic interventions during the school day. Our K-5 program offers something we call ELE (English Language Enrichment) time for 60 minutes a day. During this time, students are given specific support based on their English Language Arts needs. Some students will be exposed to a more challenging curriculum, while other students will receive the necessary interventions in an effort to reach grade level material. Our middle school program offers ‘Strategic’ and ‘Math Support’ time during the school day. Our Strategic program is an additional 50 minutes of ELA instruction for those students who needs the extra support in a Review/Preview fashion. Our Math Support class is an additional 32 minutes of specific intervention for those students performing below grade level in mathematics. Students in our middle school program who don’t need this level of support in either ELA or Mathematics will be placed in our Elective/Enrichment programs where they will experience classes such as: AVID Strategies, Engineering, Computer Applications, Drawing, Publication, Life Skills, Health, Leadership or German. Over the last several years, our staff has continued to increase our level of service to the community and received some recognition along the way. We are proud to say that our elementary program has received the California Distinguished School Award while our middle school program has been given the California Title 1 Academic Achievement Award. Know that your child is attending an educational program where both academic success and social success are our number one priorities. Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Andros Karperos Community. We hope that your time here will be a positive and successful experience for your family. Please call if you have any questions about our program…see you around campus!Lee McPeakPrincipal, AKAndros Karperos SchoolPolicies, Procedures, & Agreements Principal: Lee McPeak Assistant Principal: Clint Johnson Assistant Principal: Valerie BradleyAny additional Andros Karperos School information can be found on the Yuba City Unified School District website. All school members should reflect a caring attitude towards others. Differences are to be resolved nonviolently. It is with our students’ safety in mind that the following General School Rules are to be followed by all students:Follow directionsSolve problems without fightingUse appropriate languageNo Bullying allowedAvoid dangerous objectsUse equipment appropriatelyAvoid gender and racial harassmentStay in assigned areasAll students are aware of the rules through teacher presentations during the first week of school. School rules are also posted in each classroom, and reviewed throughout the school year. The staff are familiar with the School Rules and enforcement is as uniform and fair as possible. When staff member witnesses a student breaking a School Rule, the student can expect the following consequences:1. Give your child verbal reminder and/or time out. 2. For serious infractions, warning slips (purple slips) are often issued resulting in loss of recess or consequence from their teacher.3.For continuous infractions or a behavior that is serious in nature, the student is sent to the office with a disciplinary referral. Parent contact for any K-5 student receiving a disciplinary referral will be made by school administration. Please discuss this plan with your child. We stress good behavior at AKS. We are proud of our students and want learning to be exciting and important on our campus. A safe and pleasant environment is necessary for students and staff. GRADE 6-8AKS uses a “step system” and it is enforced throughout the school to keep the classroom a safe and positive learning environment. Students are expected to be respectful of and compliant with their instructors’ directions and rules. This program enforces the overall disciplinary policy of YCUSD and emphasizes active purposeful communication and instruction in acceptable and expected behaviors. The following plan is a step program. Specific consequences for poor choices regarding behavior will be assigned by an administrator. Parents will be contacted for each step.Steps 1 - 5: Appropriate ConsequencesSteps 6 – 12: In-School or off-campus suspension with appropriate consequencesStep 13:Off-campus suspension and appropriate consequences; at this point a student has accumulated 20 days of off-campus suspension and will be recommended for expulsion. In-School Suspension is a room where students are placed to avoid home suspension when a school rule has been broken. A student may be placed in In-School Suspension by administration or designated office staff. Students placed in In-School Suspension lose all privileges including: breaks, having lunch with their friends, and going to regular classes. While attending In-School Suspension, work may be brought from class, and an adult on duty supervises student at all times. Parents will be notified, through the mail, and a parent/student/teacher and/or administrator conference will be scheduled if necessary. In addition, there are school wide rules for all classes and students. Students who violate these school wide rules will be warned with a write up on a detention slip the first time; be given lunch trash duty with a second write up of the same violation and receive one step for the third violation of the same rule. Parents will be contacted after the second slip for the same violation.GRADE 6-8 (Physical Education-PE)At Andros Karperos, we take Physical Education very seriously.
